Who: Village of Robbins
What: The Public Works and Planning Intern will play a critical role in supporting the
Public Works and Planning departments in assessing existing assets and
preparing data in support of future planning for the Village of Robbins. The ideal
candidate will have interest and some educational or professional background in
land use planning, civil engineering, public works or a related field of study or
employment. The candidate will live in Robbins or otherwise have a strong
commitment to the advancement of the Village.
This unpaid position requires 15-20 hours/week. Stipend to cover travel costs is
available.
Primary duties will include:
1. Research the ownership and tax payment history of parcels throughout
the Village.
2. After training, assess the condition of vacant land and storm
infrastructure and record observations in the field.
3. Work collaboratively with representatives of both the Public Works and
Planning departments to develop a shared database; transfer field
observations into the shared database.
Important skills and competencies include:
1. Self-starter - comfortable managing own time; problem solving
independently and collaboratively; and elevating concerns to
supervisors.
2. Respectful approach towards co-workers and Village residents.
3. Familiarity using Excel and/or Google Sheets.
4. Ease with conducting internet research.
Through the experience, the intern will improve in:
1. Understanding about how local government manages infrastructure and
public land.
2. Understanding about how different governmental departments interact.
3. Problem solving, research, and data management skills.
