Graduate Research Assistantship (STEM Instructor) - UIC Center for Literacy (DEADLINE 7/31!)

Who: The UIC Center for Literacy’s FAmily STart (FAST) Learning and Support program administers Adult Education and Career Transition services in high need areas in Chicago.

What: 50-67% STEM Graduate/Research Assistantship, Alternative Adult High School Equivalency Teaching Assistant Position.
Do you want to use your creativity + Math/Science content knowledge to help create an innovative, competency-based curriculum based on more than a standardized test so more Illinois adults can earn their high school diploma? The STEM Instructor will research and develop curriculum and on an innovative, competency-based project by developing project-based learning assessments for adults (as an alternative to standardized test preparation) and teach in the community off campus. Duties and responsibilities include:
  • Serve as STEM (Math/Science) content specialist in the development of innovative, competency-based Math and Science adult high school equivalency theme units and curriculum
  • Develop Math/Science digital badges, integrating both in-person and independent activities
  • Collaborate with Humanities content specialist, Lead Teacher, and Coordinator in developing integrated culturally-relevant theme unit projects based in social justice and community-driven design
  • Teach Math/Science two mornings a week to Head Start/Child Care parents, CHA residents and community members. 
  • Assess and track students’ progress on IL Adult Basic Education/ High School Equivalency Content Standards to increase their academic skills.  
Schedule: Tuesday, Thursday, Friday 8:00-4:00, (20-26) hours a week.
Commitment: At least one year and two preferred
Start Date: Aug. 16, 2018
