Americans For Financial Reform Education Fund Spring 2024 Executive Fellow

Executive Fellowship (2024-2025): This Internship is a year-long, part-time, paid position. The Executive Intern will report to the COO and provide a range of organizational, operational, and logistical support to the COO and the organization. This is an outward-facing position, meaning the Executive Fellow will be in regular contact with people outside AFR/AFREF’s staff, including coalition members, the Board of Directors, vendors and service providers and other partners or event participants. An ideal candidate will be attentive to email, organized, proactive, thorough with follow-up, and able to juggle multiple projects at once. Location in the Washington, DC area is preferred but not essential.

2043 SCHIFF FOUNDATION FELLOWSHIP FOR CRITICAL ARCHITECTURAL WRITING

 This year marks the ninth annual Schiff Foundation Fellowship for Critical Architectural Writing, an innovative award program administered by the Department of Architecture and Design at the Art Institute of Chicago. This program is designed to recognize the talent of promising young scholars and promote critical discussions about the built environment. Submissions should be sent by email to isunwoo@artic.edu by 5 p.m. Friday, June 7, 2024. Late entries will not be considered.

The Critical Architectural Writing award for 2024 is $5,000, which will be given to one student enrolled in a degree-granting, graduate-level program at a Chicago-area university. Each school or department may submit up to two essays by students enrolled in courses during the Fall 2023–Spring 2024 academic year.

The Chicago United for Equity Fellowship is a year-long program for racial justice leaders across the city to strengthen their racial equity practice and strategize for a brighter future.


The CUE team is delighted to announce that applications are now open for the 2024 CUE Fellowship! Now in its sixth year, we’re looking for the next cohort of racial justice leaders ready to tackle the most pressing equity issues in Chicago.


The CUE Fellowship is a year-long program designed to bring together 15-20 leaders across civic sectors to strengthen their racial equity practice. This community of change agents will learn new frameworks, policy tools and civic change strategies to apply to their very own Racial Equity Projects.


We encourage Fellows to bring their hearts, minds, and bodies into this work. Our diverse perspectives allow the CUE community to analyze policy issues from all angles and develop strategies to address and alleviate harm to those most impacted. It’s this process, building relationships and taking meaningful action, that makes the CUE Fellowship curriculum so effective.

The Phillip D. Peters Regional Planning Fellowship was established in 1999 to honor the late Phil Peters,  the former Executive Director of the Northeastern Illinois Planning Commission (NIPC)*. Phil retired in  1999 after completing more than thirty years of extraordinary service to NIPC, during which time he played  a major role in the development and implementation of the agency’s innovative, comprehensive, and  highly-regarded planning program for the Chicago metropolitan area. The fellowship reflects Phil’s  dedication to NIPC and his personal interest in promoting careers in regional planning.

Founded in 1940 by Marshall Field III, the Field Foundation is a private, independent foundation that has been dedicated to the promise of Chicago for over 80 years. The Field Foundation aims its grantmaking toward the goal of Community Empowerment through Justice, Art and Leadership Investment. With racial equity at the center of its giving, it directs dollars to critical organizations working to address systemic issues in Chicago and aims to directly benefit some of the city’s most divested communities.

At the heart of the Field Foundation’s work is a commitment to community-centered empowerment. Through its Leadership Investment work, the Foundation aims to recognize, honor, and support the deep bench of visionary leaders across Chicago by supporting both emerging and established leaders through its grantmaking in three areas: Support of Field Fellows, support of leadership advancement organizations and individual leaders within the Chicago metro area. THE OPPORTUNITY

This is a premier opportunity in philanthropy where fellows can develop an analytical lens to evaluate solutions that advance racial equity and cultural connections in an urban setting. Fellows will review grant proposals, conduct site visits, and make grant recommendations. They will gain exposure to a wide range of social and economic issues while discovering trends in the nonprofit sector. Fellows will also create documentation for staff and the board of directors as well as work on special projects.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Fellows learn all aspects of the Field Foundation grantmaking process by reviewing grant proposals, conducting site visits, formulating grant recommendations, and provide written documentation for the Foundation’s staff and Board of Directors.

• Review and solicit grant proposals and reports, focusing on activities, results, indicators of success and budgets.

• Support Program Officers to conduct site visits and information meetings with grantee and potential grantees.

• Write briefs and funding recommendations.

• Support Program Officers in recommending grants to be presented to the Field Foundation’s Board of Directors.

• Support Leadership Investment Program Officer will all aspects of LFNC Award process

• Engage with nonprofit partners through collaboration, learning, exchange and strategic partnerships at
information sessions, conferences and through other opportunities.

Graduate students in any Chicago university that are working on degrees related to the Field Foundation’s Justice, Art, Media & Storytelling, and Leadership Investment programs are welcome to apply. The Dunn Fellowship Program provides bright, highly motivated college graduates a unique opportunity to experience firsthand the operations of state government for one year.

Dunn Fellows are recruited from public and private colleges and universities throughout the nation. Qualified applicants must have completed a bachelor's or higher graduate degree in the 18 months prior to the program's commencement and must have demonstrated a commitment to excellence through academic honors, leadership ability, extracurricular activities and community/public service involvement. Foreign Policy for America’s fellowship program offers a unique opportunity to help shape the future of American foreign policy. National Poverty Fellows Program - Post Doctoral Fellowship

The Institute for Research on Poverty is calling for applications for six postdoctoral fellowships in the National Poverty Fellows Program for positions starting in late summer or early fall of 2023.

Fellows will be in residence in one of three federal offices within the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. Currently we expect the following placements:

  • Fellowships are for one year, with the possibility of an extension for an additional year.
  • Compensation is around $92,000/year and includes health insurance.
  • Twenty percent of the fellows’ time is allotted to their own poverty- or inequality-related research.
  • Fellows will have an IRP academic research mentor and an outside policy mentor.
  • A $3,000 budget is provided that can be used to support conference travel, professional development opportunities, and research expenses.
  • Fellows receive support for two scholar-in-residence visits to IRP at the University of Wisconsin–Madison per year.

2023 Mayoral Fellowship Program - City of Chicago

The City of Chicago is excited to announce the 2023 Mayoral Fellowship Program. The Mayor’s Office Fellowship Program is the premier opportunity for bright, motivated, and civic-minded graduate students from all disciplines to apply their coursework and to learn more about public service. Two virtual info sessions for students will be held on Wed., Oct. 26 from 12:30– 1:30 p.m. and Thurs., Nov. 3 from 5– 6 p.m. The application deadline is Monday, November 7, 2022, 11:59 p.m. CT. The City of Chicago Mayor’s Office Fellowship Program provides an in-depth view of how city government operates. Fellows will have the opportunity to: 
  • Work directly with the Mayor’s senior staff
  • Research policies and evaluate their potential benefit to Chicago
  • Meet with Commissioners, Aldermen, senior-level staff from various City departments and sister agencies, community partners, and experts in a variety of policy fields
  • Draft memoranda on upcoming issues and new initiatives
  • Learn about the work and mission of the City’s departments through weekly presentations by department commissioners and senior level staff, and via guided tours of City facilities
  • Attend press conferences, City Council meetings, staff meetings, and strategic planning sessions
  • Develop “New Ideas” for City policies and initiatives

Through the Mayor's Office Fellowship Program, you may accomplish the following:  

  • Develop new initiatives that keep Chicago green
  • Research ways to keep Chicago affordable
  • Work on workforce development initiatives targeting specific industries
  • Build a new technology product that impacts residents' lives
  • Outline best practices in public safety programs and youth engagement
  • Research and compare housing-related policies in U.S. cities
  • Create innovative solutions to traffic and infrastructure challenges
  • Recommend ways to better integrate technology with City functions
  • Integrate human-centered design practices into digital services for residents
  • Analyze information on regional issues and Great Lakes policies
  • Create new programs that connect City residents with the great cultural resources of Chicago

Eligibility Criteria

The Chicago Mayor’s Office seeks a well-rounded cohort comprising Fellows with expertise in areas such as public policy, urban planning, public health, law, business, social work, or computer science. Graduate students from all disciplines are encouraged to apply. 

Required qualifications:

  • Be a currently enrolled graduate student at the time of employment
  • Have a cumulative GPA of at least 3.0 on a 4.0 scale
  • Reside within Chicago during the 11-week fellowship

Desired qualifications:

  • Demonstrate a strong commitment to excellence as evidenced by professional success, academic honors, leadership ability, extracurricular activities, and involvement in community or public service
  • Be enthusiastic about public service and city government
  • Embody strong personal character and conviction

Applying to the Summer 2023 Mayor’s Office Fellowship is a two-step process. All prospective fellows must complete Step 1 of the application process. Short-listed fellows will advance to Step 2. 

Step 1 (Due Monday, November 7, 2022): Prospective fellows must complete an initial application screening through the City of Chicago’s Department of Human Resources CAREERS website. Applicants will be asked to provide: 

  • Cover letter and resume
  • A letter of enrollment from their current graduate school
  • An official transcript from their current graduate school (For graduate students in their first year of study who have not yet received grades, an official dated letter of acceptance to your current school AND a current class schedule will be accepted in place of an official transcript)

Description

The Port Authority of New York & New Jersey is looking for career-minded individuals with a passion and commitment to public service to join our distinguished rotational program for graduate students who expect to receive their degree in Fall 2022 or Spring 2023. This is your chance to join the Port Authority as we connect the region in new ways for generations to come.

If you have ever flown out of JFK, biked across the George Washington Bridge, or captured that perfect picture of the World Trade Center, then you have witnessed just some of what the Port Authority does. We run some of the busiest and most critical transportation facilities in New York-New Jersey metropolitan region. It takes a dedicated team of over a thousand people to operate these facilities safely, efficiently, and with a high standard of customer service. Our nearly 8,000 employees are committed to the work they do – work that moves millions of people and supports billions of dollars in economic activity each year.

About the Program:

The Port Authority of New York & New Jersey’s Leadership Fellow Program is a distinguished program for graduate students who expect to receive their degree in Fall 2022 or Spring 2023.

The Leadership Fellow Program is a two-year rotational program that offers on-the-job experience in approximately four different business functions. Leadership Fellows have an opportunity to explore many different areas such as operations, finance, transportation, sustainability, etc. The Leadership Fellow Program is designed to build a strong foundation of business acumen, adaptability, and knowledge of the Port Authority as a whole.

Past Leadership Fellows have contributed to key regional capital programs, learned the nuts and bolts of policy development, and managed the challenges of daily operations at our transportation facilities. The breadth and depth of these experiences are critical in preparing Leadership Fellows to be future leaders within the agency.

Leadership Fellows are presented with a variety of developmental opportunities that range from one-on-one coaching to structured mentoring and various targeted training programs.

After successful completion of the program, Leadership Fellows will be considered for key positions in areas such as policy analysis, finance, capital programs, operations, or related business functions.

Qualifications:

General Skills

Leadership Fellows are selected based on academic achievement, analytical and communication skills, and work experience.

The selection process for the program is highly rigorous and consists of multiple rounds of interviews, including a qualitative interview, a competency-based panel interview, and multiple assessment exercises.

Academic Skills

Students graduating with a graduate degree in Fall 2022 or Spring 2023 are eligible to participate in the Program.

Candidates should possess a record of academic achievement in the areas of Public Administration, Business Administration, Public Policy, Urban Planning, Public Finance, Economics, Transportation Management, or a related discipline.

Desired:

Candidates must have a clear interest in a career in public service management

Candidates must demonstrate excellent problem solving, analytical, quantitative, written and oral communication, and interpersonal skills with a strong customer service orientation and political acumen.

Candidates must be flexible and enthusiastic about experiencing all the Port Authority has to offer, including areas that are not necessarily aligned with their professional backgrounds.

At least one year of work experience and/or internships in public service, transportation, government, or related fields is preferred

Applications that do not include a resume and an essay response will be considered incomplete and will not be moved forward in the selection process.
