Graduate Research Assistant - UIC Great Cities Institute

UIC’s Great Cities Institute (GCI) seeks a Graduate Research Assistant for a
community/economic/housing evaluation project in West Garfield Park.

Tasks will include:

1. Develop relationships with persons in, or concerned with, West Garfield Park housing
including community leaders, developers, lenders, organizational staff or others who
can inform our project about the neighborhood and its interests regarding housing
development for ownership. Interview these individuals to identify opportunities,
problems and expectations.

2. Review City building permits on a monthly basis through the Chicago Data Portal to
identify new housing and identify owners, builders and property histories in West
Garfield Park.

3. Monitor current records of the City Council, Planning Commission and other City bodies
for actions affecting new housing development or activity in West Garfield Park. Also
monitor city agencies for housing policy developments.

Additional tasks will develop as the project evolves.

Hiring Survey Interviewers for an Evaluation Project   


Job Description 

UIC’s Great Cities Institute (GCI) seeks to hire survey interviewers to conduct structured survey and narrative in-person interviews with persons served by four direct service programs as part of an evaluation study funded by the Illinois Criminal Justice Information Authority (ICJIA). Interviews will be conducted between November 2022 and April 2023.


Will likely conduct between ten and twenty interviews and work under direct supervision of a GCI supervisor. 


In-person interviews will be conducted at sites suitable to subjects and interviewer.


General Responsibilities: 

  • Work with GCI staff and interviewees to schedule interviews.

  • Review interview recordings with supervisor.

  • Participate in periodic training and supervision.


Minimum Acceptable Qualifications:

  • Strong ability to respond positively and flexibly during an interview or during scheduling.

  • Reliable transportation and reasonable proximity to Kankakee Illinois required.

  • Ability to schedule flexibly to accommodate interviewee needs


Additional Preferences:

Previous interviewing experience preferred.


Job Description for Survey Interviewer in Waukegan and LaSalle/Peru

This position will involve in-person narrative interviews with recovering persons in the Waukegan and LaSalle/Peru areas of Illinois. Interviewers will obtain information from subjects by means of interviews, most of which will be only partly scripted.  


Responsibilities: 

  • Conduct semi-structured in-person narrative interviews with clients of local substance use and justice-involvement recovery organizations.  Interviews will be conducted at organization offices or at mutually agreed-upon public sites.



Minimum Acceptable Qualifications:

  • Requires either 1) degree or significant coursework in fields of psychology, social work, sociology, counseling, or health care or 2) significant clinical experience.

  • Ability to conduct lengthy, semi-structured interviews, adapting to client responses while learning required information.

  • Strong interpersonal skills and demonstrated ability to interact with people sensitively around challenging topics.


Additional Preferences:

  • Knowledge of various therapeutic approaches such as motivational interviewing, person-centered therapy, trauma-informed care, and harm reduction.

  • Previous interviewing experience preferred.

  • Experience and/or training in peer-supported recovery, harm reduction, and support for persons with substance use or mental health disorders, and/or justice involvement.

Survey interviewers will conduct in-person interviews with high school students in the Kankakee School District 111.


Responsibilities: 

  • Conduct mostly scripted interviews with participants in youth empowerment programs operated by a public high school.  Interviews will be conducted at high school offices.

  • Requires either 1) degree or significant coursework in fields of psychology, education, social work, sociology, or counseling or 2) significant experience with youth development, youth counseling, or teaching.

Position Description 

The School of labor and Employment Relations at The University of Illinois invites applications  for the position of hourly Graduate Research Assistant (RA) with the Project for Middle Class  Renewal. The Project for Middle Class Renewal was established in the fall of 2015 with the goal  of promoting policy analysis, scholarly research, and scholar-practitioner exchanges on  employment related issues. RA will work exclusively on the Examining the Diversity of  Experience with the Federal Tax System across Race and Immigration Status project 

The position is part of a UIUC supported research study that examines how families understand  and navigate tax return filing, the barriers families encounter applying for and receiving family based tax credits, and how families spend their tax refunds. This aspect of the research has a particular focus on the experiences of Latiné/Hispanic immigrant families. The position involves  recruitment of study participants, conducting one-on-one interviews with participants, and  qualitative data analysis of interview data. While participants in the study will be from the  Chicagoland area, the work related to this position can be done virtually. Expected work hours  are between 10 to 15 hours a week, and work schedule is flexible. This is a 4-to-6-month position that begins as soon as possible.  

SPECIFIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES 

• Recruitment of study participants 

• Conduct semi-structured in-depth interviews with parents with children about their  experiences with the federal tax system (i.e. filing taxes and receiving tax funds) and the  Earned Income Tax Credit and Child Tax Credit. 

• Collaborate with principal investigator on developing processes for coding interview data  and identifying emerging themes from the interviews.  

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:  

• Minimum 3 years of experience working with and in immigrant and Latinx communities.  • Bilingual (Written and Spoken) in Spanish and English.  

• Experience conducting interviews or prior experience engaged in activities that  demonstrate ability to compassionately engage in one-on-one interviews. For example, 

experience doing community outreach, community organizing, individual capacity  building. 

• Familiarity with Microsoft Word and Excel or similar spreadsheet application.  • General knowledge of systems, policies and programs that impact families and children.  • Possess a bachelor’s degree in Social Work, Latin American and Latino Studies, Gender  Studies, Sociology, Public Health, Urban Studies, Public Policy, or related field 

BENEFICIAL QUALIFICATIONS:  

• Experience using Qualitative Data Analyses Software (e.q., Nvivo, MAXQDA, Dedoose,  Atlas.ti etc.)

Research Assistantship - Government Finance Research Center

What: Work on a research project funded by UIC’s Government Finance Research Center:

  1.   Prepare literature reviews on topics related to municipal revenue forecasting, debt management, and capital assets
  2. Assist with quantitative data collection using sources like Comprehensive Annual Financial Reports (CAFRs) and the EMMA-MSRB database

Work Duties
Participate in an international research collaborative funded by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council. Work under the guidance of Dr. Parker and in collaboration with graduate students and faculty from several Canadian Universities to do the following:

  • Conduct research on topics such as gender, intersectionality, feminism, program evaluation, affordable housing, community networks, neighborhood supports, community based research, poverty, and equity.

What: The Center on Health Promotion Research for Persons with Disabilities at UIC is hiring a research assistant to assist on projects related to health promotion, health policy, community inclusion, and the built environment. Summer Graduate Research Assistant: Fair Housing - UIC

We are seeking a UIC graduate student with interests in housing, particularly as it relates to racial residential segregation and programs and policies related to it.  Specifically, we seek a graduate student who is interested in identifying programs and policies whose goal is to support racial residential integration and/or break the cycle of residential segregation. 

The work would involve researching existing programs (through online searches and reaching out to non-profits and their staff), documenting these efforts through a compilation of relevant websites and reports, as well as providing summaries of the programs and policies that are identified.  Additionally, the research assistant would have an opportunity to spend time at the Oak Park Regional Housing Center, a national model of housing integration programs, learning about the staff and how they do their work. 

The position is an hourly appointment ($24.50/hour) with the expectation of 20 hours/week for 10 weeks beginning May 15.  You would be working closely with Maria Krysan and Jay Readey, Esq. (Interim Executive Director of the Oak Park Regional Housing Center).

Research Assistant (part time) – Woodstock Institute (Chicago)

Who: Woodstock Institute is seeking a part-time research assistant to assist Woodstock’s research team with a project studying a program which provides home modifications for people with disabilities.
Woodstock Institute is a leading nonprofit research and policy organization in the areas of equitable lending and investments; wealth creation and preservation; and safe financial products, services, and systems. Woodstock Institute works locally and nationally to create a financial system in which lower-wealth persons and communities of color can safely borrow, save, and build wealth so that they can achieve economic security and community prosperity.

What: This is a part time position (approximately 15 hours per week) located in Chicago. The Research Assistant will work with Woodstock’s research team on a large research project examining a program which provides home modifications for people with disabilities. What: UIC Great Cities Institute (GCI) is seeking a graduate student Research Assistant (RA) for the Spring 2019 semester whose primary responsibility will be to support GCI staff with economic development and related research projects.

Who: The Arab American Cultural Center (ARABAMC) is interested in creating awareness about Arab American cultures and histories, building community and solidarity, and promoting social justice and cultural diversity.

What: This position includes the following responsibilities:

Graduate Research Assistantship - UIC AANAPISI Initiative (CLOSES 7/13)

Who: The UIC Asian American Native American Pacific Islander Serving-Institutions (AANAPISI) Initiative

What: 25% time Graduate Research Assistantship (R.A.) for fall, spring, and summer from August 2018-August 2019. The appointment will be 10 hours per week.  
The primary scope of the AANAPISI Graduate Assistant's responsibilities will be to provide research support for the AANAPISI Principal Investigator and Project Director. Responsibilities will include:
  • Research and administrative support for the PI's teaching and research areas. This will include curriculum development for a course on Asian American Gender and Sexual Diversity, research support for work on Asian American children's books, and research support/administrative support for courses on Asian American and Pacific Islander college students in higher education. 
  • Research and program coordination support for a new campus public events/speakers initiative focusing on free speech and diversity of ideas and viewpoints in relation to Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders.  
  • Some administrative support for grant team management as needed.
