The Planning Intern assists the Senior Planner with performing a variety of routine and complex technical  and professional work related to current planning. The Planning Intern assists with verification of  compliance with zoning, signage, and related code provisions, policies, agreements, rules, and  regulations. 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Assist Senior Planner and Community Development Director with the review and coordination of the  Village’s Comprehensive Plan Update; participate in meetings with planning committee stakeholders. 
  • Assist Senior Planner with conducting field inspections, signage inspections, and verification of  development projects’ compliance with Development Standards and Design Guidelines.  
  • Assist with timely plan reviews for zoning compliance. 
  • Provide professional customer service in responding to inquiries related to zoning regulations and related ordinances. 
  • Communicate (verbally and in writing) and interact professionally with members of the public in the  field, at the permit counter, over the phone, through email, and by other means of correspondence.  
  • Perform research of historical documentation and assemble data for studies, surveys, and reports. 
  • Assist with organization and maintenance of central filing system for Subdivision Plats and associated Covenants, Conditions, and Restrictions. 
  • Assist with preparation of Village GIS maps. 
  • Maintain a courteous and respectful attitude and represent the Village in a positive and professional  manner to all persons. 
  • Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with coworkers and the public. 
  • Assist other Community Development staff members as needed. 
  • Perform other related duties and special projects as assigned.

A valid State of Illinois Driver’s License is required upon hire. Knowledge or general understanding of  land use and zoning regulations, and the role of municipal codes and ordinances. 

Attendance Requirements 

The Planning Intern is a seasonal position. Attendance is required for up to 40 hours per week,  Monday through Friday, between the hours of 9:00am – 5:00pm.

For nearly 40 years, the Impact Investments team has been building the field of impact investing and providing catalytic capital to expand opportunity, empower and improve quality of life among marginalized communities, and drive social and environmental progress. General Summary of Internship:

Under the direction of the Associate Director of Impact Investments, the Intern will serve as an active team member, participating in regular meetings covering strategy, due diligence, execution and portfolio management. This role is designed to give exposure to critical aspects of managing the Foundation’s $500 million allocation of capital dedicated to impact investments and to the field of impact investing more broadly.

Additionally, the Impact Investments Intern will: 

  • Collaborate closely with the Foundation’s Chicago Commitment team on the development of a new strategy to use impact investing to help advance community development focused on retail and commercial investment in historically underserved and disinvested communities in Chicago. This includes a landscape review of community development organizations in Chicago in order to identify a list of potential investees with a pipeline of developable opportunities, assistance in the development of an approach for outreach and solicitation of interest in applying for investment capital, and the creation of a timeline by which investment and grant capital will be committed and deployed.

  • Contribute to team efforts related to portfolio management, pipeline development, due diligence, and governance.

  • Engage with a series of special projects to be determined based on emerging priorities.

  • In addition to the work outlined above to advance the strategy and existing projects within Impact Investments, professional development will be a core element of this internship. Specific networking meetings, both internal and external to the Foundation, will be arranged with a focus on the targeted areas and sectors of interest of our intern.

Job Descriptions/Duties: 

The Madison County Council of Governments (MCCOG) is hiring one full-time intern for the summer of 2022, with the  intention of transitioning the position into a Graduate Assistantship. The candidate should generally be available between  May 1, 2022, and April 30, 2023. The position will be 35 hours per week during the summer and follow Graduate  Assistantship requirements during the school year. The position will have the ability to operate in a remote capacity but  may need to visit the office during the summer for equipment requirements. Should the candidate prefer to work in the  office, an appropriate workstation and equipment will be provided. 

This internship is for aspiring transportation-oriented students looking for an opportunity to gain professional work  experience and training in transportation planning and engineering. The intern should have a substantial interest in the  analysis of transportation systems, with a focus on multi-modal planning and developing context sensitive solutions where  appropriate. 

Review of applications will commence in March 2022 and will continue until the position is filled.  

General Responsibilities 

Under supervision of the Principal Transportation Planner, assist the Transportation Planning Team on a variety of  assignments, such as:

Developing transportation plans, analysis, and/or ordinances. 

Conducting basic research and data collection. 

Compiling data for corridor and operations studies. 

Conducting field work as assigned. 

Specific Project Description 

Under supervision of the Principal Transportation Planner, the primary work will include a three-stage project:  

1) Conduct an audit & update process of the MCCOG Model Inventory of Roadway Elements (MIRE) within ArcGIS  Pro. 

2) Utilize the updated MIRE data to overhaul the MCCOG Road Diet Tool for identifying potential road right-sizing  project applications. 

3) Assist the Transportation Planning Team in the update & development of a joint Regional Bicycle & Pedestrian  Facilities Plan, with a direct role in ensuring the integration of the Road Diet Tool results. 

Basic Qualifications 

Enrollment in accredited undergraduate or graduate program in Urban and Regional Planning, Civil Engineering,  or similar. 

Working knowledge of ESRI ArcGIS and Microsoft Office suite. 

Knowledge of college level mathematical concepts.

Position Description 


The School of Labor and Employment Relations at The University of Illinois invites applications  for the position of hourly Graduate Research Assistant (RA) with the Project for Middle Class  Renewal. The Project for Middle Class Renewal was established in the fall of 2015 with the goal  of promoting policy analysis, scholarly research, and scholar-practitioner exchanges on  employment related issues. RA will work exclusively on the Examining the Diversity of  Experience with the Federal Tax System across Race and Immigration Status project 


The position is part of a UIUC supported research study that examines how families understand  and navigate tax return filing, the barriers families encounter applying for and receiving family based tax credits, and how families spend their tax refunds. This aspect of the research has a  particular focus on the experiences of Latiné/Hispanic immigrant families. The position involves  recruitment of study participants, conducting one-on-one interviews with participants, and  qualitative data analysis of interview data. The research will occur primarily in Chicago and the  near suburbs. This is a 6-month position that begins as soon as possible.  

SPECIFIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES 

Recruitment of study participants 

Conduct semi-structured in-depth interviews with parents with children about their experiences with the federal tax system (i.e. filing taxes and receiving tax funds) and the  Earned Income Tax Credit and Child Tax Credit. 

Collaborate with principal investigator on developing processes for coding interview data  and identifying emerging themes from the interviews.  

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:  

Minimum 3 years of experience working with and in immigrant and Latinx communities.  

Bilingual in Spanish and English.  

Experience conducting interviews or prior experience engaged in activities that  demonstrate ability to compassionately engage in one-on-one interviews. For example,  experience doing community outreach, community organizing, individual capacity building. 

Familiarity with Microsoft Word and Excel or similar spreadsheet application. 

General knowledge of systems, policies and programs that impact families and children.  

Possess a bachelor’s degree in Social Work, Latin American and Latino Studies, Gender  Studies, Sociology, Public Health, Urban Studies, Public Policy, or related field 

BENEFICIAL QUALIFICATIONS:  

Experience using Qualitative Data Analyses Software (e.q., Nvivo, MAXQDA, Dedoose,  Atlas.ti etc.)  

Experience working on a research team, managing qualitative datasets.  

Knowledge of federal tax policy, specifically the Earned Income Tax Credit and Child  Tax Credit 

Possess a Master’s Degree in Social Work, Latin American and Latino Studies, Gender  Studies, Sociology, Public Health, Urban Studies, Public Policy, or related field.

Community Development Internship, Village of Libertyville, Illinois

The Village of Libertyville is offering a full-time summer internship position in its Community Development Department.  The Village of Libertyville has a population of approximately 20,490 and is located in Lake County about 50 minutes north of the City of Chicago.  This position will report to the Senior Planner but will have ample opportunities to work with the Community Development Department and Engineering Division.  The Community Development Department encompasses the following functions:  Planning and Zoning, Historic Preservation, Economic Development, Building, with Code Enforcement and Inspectional Services.  The intern will gain experience in these functional areas and will be involved with the variety of projects and duties, including, but not limited to:


  • Review implementation of the Comprehensive Plan.

  • Research unique bulk requirements for residential subdivisions
