Research Assistant - UIC School of Public Health

Internship - Cook County Assessor's Office

Who: Cook County's Assessor's Office

What: Initiative to improve data management and analyses. The Cook County Assessor’s office are prepared to have the interns start in early to mid-January.

1. Number of intern vacancies: up to 2 from UIC

2. Duration: Winter session: January 2020 – March 2020

3. Compensation: $15/hour

4. Number of hours: up to 20 hours per week (as agreed to with their supervisor, the Chief Data Officer)

Minimum Qualifications
  • Graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor's degree in economics, public policy, public administration, computer science, mathematics, or related field,
  • Graduate student in good academic standing, enrolled in an accredited college or university offering a graduate degree program, and
  • A minimum grade point average of 2.5 on a 4.0 grading scale or 3.0 on a 5.0 grading scale (or equivalent GPA on an equivalent grading scale).

Preferred Qualifications
  • A minimum GPA of 3.0 or above (on a 4.0 grading scale) or a 3.5 or above (on a 5.0 grading scale), or equivalent GPA on an equivalent grading scale.
  • Excellent problem solving skills.
  • The ability to work in a collaborative environment with a diverse set of teammates. · Willingness to learn to use Git and GitHub.
  • Willingness to learn to use R to analyze data.
  • Willingness to learn to use R Markdown to produce reports.
  • Willingness to learn to use relational databases and SQL queries.
  • Willingness to learn to use object-oriented programming languages.
  • Willingness to learn to use geospatial mapping and information systems.

Graduate Fellows - Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute

Who: Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute

What: The Graduate Fellowship Program (GFP) enhances participants’ leadership abilities, strengthens professional skills, and produces more competent and competitive Latino professionals. This nine-month paid program offers exceptional Latinos unparalleled exposure to hands-on experience in a variety of public policy areas, which may include: Education, Housing, Health, Law, and STEM (with a focus on energy and the environment). Participants will complete their first-half placement in a congressional office on Capitol Hill and will have the opportunity to pursue a second-half placement that best matches their policy interest. The range of placements include: congressional offices, committees, federal agencies, the White House, national non-profit advocacy organizations, and government-related institutions. Graduate Fellows will also enhance their professional skills by producing a policy brief and organizing a policy briefing on Capitol Hill.Applicants to the Graduate Fellowship Program must have completed a master’s degree or JD within two years prior to the program start date.

Community Planner/Landscape Architect Fellowship - National Park Service

Who: National Park Service

What: The New Mexico National Park Service (NPS) Community Planning/Landscape Architect Fellowship is a unique opportunity for an exemplary Latino master’s graduate student or recent graduate. The Fellowship is designed to provide practical experience with diverse communities that we serve including Native American and Latino. It provides an opportunity and exposure to community outdoor recreation and conservation planning projects with a wide spectrum of partners in New Mexico and in El Paso, Texas. The fellow will work on local-level collaborative trail, park, and conservation planning and design, and public engagement with rural to urban communities. Occasional overnight travel with RTCA project managers is required with travel costs reimbursed by the Hispanic Access Foundation (HAF). The fellow will support two RTCA project managers in Santa Fe and in Albuquerque, New Mexico. The selected candidate will develop or improve skills in some or all of the following areas: community planning, conservation, landscape architecture, outdoor recreation design, public outreach and engagement, and partnership development for community-led conservation and outdoor recreation.

Immigration Intern - The Resurrection Project

Our efforts have resulted in leveraging over $469 million in community investment.

Department Description:

The goal of the Immigration Legal Services Program is to assist currently eligible immigrants with their applications before USCIS; to provide direct legal services while engaging more people in Community Organizing and Financial Wellness programming; and to provide resources for the community to prepare for Comprehensive Immigration Reform or to prepare for Immigration enforcement measures.

Internship Duties and Responsibilities:

Assist Intake Specialist with front desk responsibilities, such as:
  • Manage TRP’s Immigration Legal Services Program intake process and assist applicants in a professional and compassionate manner.
  • Maintain all information confidential.
  • Operate a multi-line hotline with immigration inquiries and assist with a high volume of public and professional inquiries by triaging individual cases and providing general information on community resources and immigration relief options.
  • Provide support for the immigration department: perform data entry; prepare and disseminate mail; file, scan and copy documents for case files.
  • Opportunity to actively engage in public education workshops regarding important immigration issues facing the community.
  • Opportunity to engage in understanding current immigration law and TRP’s office procedures relating to immigration case work.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Essential Knowledge and Skills:
  • Bilingual in English and Spanish required.
  • Desire to learn about immigration law and policy.
  • Strong customer service skills required.
  • Proficient knowledge of MS office and internet required.
  • Must have availability on Saturday’s.
  • Must be able to make a 6-monthcommitment (January –June 2020).
  • Prior knowledge or experience immigration law and policy not necessary.
