Land Use Planning Internship (grads & undergrads) - 1000 Friends of Oregon (Portland)

Who: 1000 Friends of Oregon is a forty-three year old public interest organization that advocates smart growth through comprehensive land use and transportation planning, using Oregon’s renowned planning program. We work with Oregonians across the state to enhance the quality of life for all, by building livable urban and rural communities and protecting family farms and forests.

What: The purpose of the Gerhardt Internship is to provide an opportunity for on-the-job experience for planning students or those in similar fields, especially for those interested in public service. The intern will work on one or two large projects, such as 1000 Friends’ efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions through linking land use and transportation planning, ensuring communities plan for affordable and diverse housing, or to preserve farm land. The intern might also work on smaller, short-term projects to gain a wider acquaintance with Oregon's land use program. Supervision will be provided by the 1000 Friends’ staff member overseeing each project.

Planning Internship - San Francisco County Transportation Authority (CLOSES 2/11)

Who: The San Francisco County Transportation Authority - Planning Division

What: The SFCTA Planning Division leads a wide variety of innovative transportation planning studies and policy analyses. The Planning Division is currently working on several on-going initiatives including ConnectSF, an update to the City’s long-range transportation plan program, and the Treasure Island Mobility Management Program. Our work program also includes projects that study  emerging mobility technologies and advance transportation demand management, policy and funding development.
SFCTA is seeking an intern to work 20-40 hours per week for at least a 12-week period of time.

Summer ‘19 Google Public Policy Fellowship for US and Latin America (Due 2/15)

Who: The Google U.S. and Latin America Policy Fellowship program offers undergraduate, graduate, and law students interested in Internet and technology policy the opportunity to spend the summer contributing to the public dialogue on these issues, and exploring future academic and professional interests.

What: Fellows will have the opportunity to work at public interest organizations at the forefront of debates on broadband and access policy, content regulation, copyright and creativity, consumer privacy, open government, government surveillance, data security, data innovation, free expression and more. More information about the host organizations and the areas of focus for the fellows is outlined here.

Fellows will be assigned a lead mentor at their host organizations and will have the opportunity to work with several senior staff members over the course of the summer. Fellows will be expected to make substantive contributions to the work of their organization, including conducting policy research and analysis, drafting reports and white papers, attending government and industry meetings and conferences, and participating in other advocacy activities.

Fellows will receive a stipend of USD 7,500 in 2019.

Graduate Fellowship - Property and Environment Research Center (Bozeman, MO)

Who: Founded in 1980 by a handful of outdoor-oriented economists in Bozeman, Montana, PERC—the Property and Environment Research Center—is a conservation and research institute dedicated to free market environmentalism. Our research examines how markets encourage cooperation instead of conflict over natural resources and how property rights make the environment an asset by giving owners incentives for stewardship. Together, they improve environmental quality.

What: PERC Graduate Fellowships offer the ideal opportunity for graduate and law students who are interested in researching issues related to natural resources, innovation, property rights, and the environment. Graduate fellows spend three months at PERC over the summer in Bozeman, Montana, researching and writing a paper under the mentorship of a PERC Senior Fellow.

Graduate fellows have the opportunity to work in depth on a thesis or dissertation and can fasttrack research. This is a chance to get feedback from experts in fields including economics, law, and environmental science. Graduate Fellows are expected to interact with other PERC scholars and fellows while in residence, and it is intended that the fellowship period be thought of as an opportunity to either establish or strengthen a continuing relationship with PERC. Office space is provided in a congenial, stimulating work environment in a locale of unparalleled natural beauty. Fellows will receive a monthly stipend in addition, reimbursement for reasonable domestic round trip travel expenses to Montana.

Peters Fellowship - CMAP

Who: The Chicago Metropolitan Agency for Planning (CMAP) and the Advisory Committee of the Phillip D. Peters Regional Planning Fellowship Program offer this annual fellowship. As one of the only fellowships of its kind across the country, the Peters Fellowship provides a graduate student with a paid work and enrichment experience at a major regional planning agency in one of the nation's largest metropolitan areas.

What: The fellowship is awarded each year to a qualified Master's degree graduate student in urban and regional planning or a related field. The objective is to open the fellowship to a broad range of applicants representative of the full scope of regional planning. A 400 hour work experience at CMAP is provided under the guidance and mentoring of a senior staff member. The fellowship is scheduled for a mutually convenient, consecutive period between May and December of each year, with the fellow compensated at the rate of $20.00 per hour.

Summer Analyst Fellow - HR&A Advisors (NYC)

Who: HR&A provides strategic advisory services for clients in the public, private, and non-profit sectors to solve some of the most complex challenges facing cities today. We care about improving the quality of urban life, and we are increasingly focused on the challenges of inclusivity, infrastructure, and technological innovation in cities as we advance public-private development projects that improve economic, environmental, and social outcomes.

What: We are seeking full-time Summer Analyst Fellows for 12 weeks in our New York, Dallas, Los Angeles, Raleigh, and Washington, DC offices. Our analytical staff form the foundation of our team-oriented and collaborative structure, and help to drive our data-driven approach to city building. Many current members of HR&A’s team started as Summer Analyst Fellows.

Summer Analyst Fellows are asked to take on responsibilities in line with those of the core analytical staff at HR&A. Day-to-day tasks range from project to project, and often include market analysis; case study research; econometric modeling; spatial analysis; preparation of real estate pro formas for a range of uses and public-private structures; and public policy analysis. Analysts also help prepare written reports, presentations, and Excel models for clients, as well as firm marketing materials and proposals for new projects.

Community Development Internship - Village of Glen Ellyn

Who: Village of Glyn Ellyn Community Development Department. The Department provides direct staff support to the Plan Commission, Zoning Board of Appeals, Historic Preservation Commission and Building Board of Appeals. Among other things, the Department coordinates the review and analysis of all development projects, maintains land use and building records, issues building permits, conducts building inspections, enforces Codes, handles development engineering reviews, prepares and oversees annexations and annexation agreements, and assists in the preparation of planning policies.

What: The Village of Glen Ellyn is seeking an intern to assist the Village until May 31, 2020 in the Community Development Department. The intern will provide assistance to the Planning and Development Director and Village Planners in support of the daily activities of the planning division and will work on a wide range of projects including assistance with development and zoning reviews, annexation agreements, Code updates and implementation of a Downtown Strategic Plan.

Sustainable Streets Summer Intern Program - SFMTA (San Francisco)

Who: San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA) Sustainable Streets Division’s summer internship program

What: Gain valuable on-the-job experience under the guidance of experienced transportation professionals. Interns will participate in a variety of transportation planning and engineering activities including:
  • Designing and implementing transportation safety improvements and multimodal complete streets 
  • Performing community outreach and engagement, responding to community requests for transportation improvements 
  • Coordinating with other city agencies, contractors and communities on transportation-related projects 
  • Field trips and seminars

Transportation/GIS Internship - IDOT & DAMA Consultants (Schaumburg)

Who: Engineering, GIS, and Subconsultant for the Illinois Department of Transportation in Schaumburg, Illinois and DAMA Consultants, LLC

What: The intern will be assisting with work on IDOT’s data management of their traffic count database and roadways projects. The intern would be managing and working with the sub-consultant team (DAMA) at the IDOT headquarters to work on ArcGIS maps, coordinate the usage of traffic count data and maintain the data itself, and arrange the data once it is collected into ArcGIS, Excel, and other formats.

Policy Fellow - Institute for Justice (U of Chicago)

Who: The Institute for Justice Clinic on Entrepreneurship at the University of Chicago Law School seeks a bright and dedicated person to join our team as a Policy Fellow. Part of the Institute for Justice, the national law firm for liberty, the IJ Clinic provides free legal assistance for low-income entrepreneurs in Chicago and advocates for legal reforms so that entrepreneurs in Chicago have the freedom to pursue their dreams. For example, the IJ Clinic has successfully advocated to legalize food carts, to simplify the permit process for business signs, and to lighten the regulatory burdens for children’s play centers, computer centers, and home-based businesses.

What: The IJ Clinic seeks to expand its capacity for policy advocacy by adding a fellow to our team who is dedicated exclusively to supporting the IJ Clinic’s policy work. The Policy Fellow will work closely with the IJ Clinic’s two supervising attorneys and community relations coordinator to support and guide the IJ Clinic’s policy endeavors at both the city and state level.

This is an exciting opportunity to help guide the future of the IJ Clinic’s advocacy efforts through policy research and to provide our projects with the ammunition we need to change the laws that create unnecessary barriers for entrepreneurs. The fellow will have the chance to collaborate and learn from accomplished activists, strategic researchers, and legislative advocates throughout the Institute for Justice, while helping to lead policy research and work in Chicago and Illinois. The position demands someone who is hard-working, self-motivated, and entrepreneurial, has strong writing and analytical skills, and can communicate well with community members, attorneys, and policymakers. The ideal candidate will have a deep commitment to the IJ Clinic’s mission and the importance of economic liberty and economic development.

Transit Scheduling Internship - Csched (Chicago)

Who: CSched is a team of consultants with extensive knowledge in scheduling public transit, bus and rail, as well as analyzing operational data with the help of the HASTUS scheduling software (developed by GIRO Inc.). CSched provides consulting services to public transit agencies, school boards and private operators throughout the United States and Canada, with additional clients spanning the globe. CSched’s services include assisting private operators in developing bid proposals, assisting agencies in developing route timetables and driver schedules, evaluating agencies’ current scheduling practices, and helping to improve the “streetability” of schedules in daily operations. CSched also provides smaller agencies with access to HASTUS through our HASTUS by CSched service.

What: CSched-USA is looking to hire an intern for summer 2019 at our office in Chicago, IL. Under CSched’s training and guidance, duties for the intern may include:
  • Assist in data entry of transit schedules in the HASTUS scheduling software 
  • Use HASTUS software to generate reports and data exports 
  • Assist CSched staff in data analysis related to running time, cost efficiency, service quality, or other metrics as needed on a project-by-project basis 
  • Developing analytical tools using Microsoft Excel 
  • The intern will be working in a small office environment, typically with one or two other CSched staff. 

Research and Policy Internships - Heartland Alliance

Who: Heartland Alliance is grounded in over 130 years of experience providing housing, healthcare, jobs and justice to individuals living in poverty and seeking safety. Heartland Alliance’s Research & Policy Division engages in research on social issues and solutions, policy and systems change, and field building nationwide. The department is home to the Social IMPACT Research Center, Heartland Alliance’s Policy & Advocacy team, and Heartland Alliance’s National Initiatives on Economic Opportunity team. Our policy and research efforts strengthen communities, advance human rights, and foster equity and opportunity. The Research & Policy Department’s work is rooted in and informed by people with lived experience, and the experiences of our program participants.

What: Heartland Alliance has three types of internships available:

1. Policy and Advocacy Internships: Heartland Alliance’s Policy and Advocacy team has one internship available. At the state level, the team works to advance legislative and administrative solutions to poverty by drafting legislation, advancing legislative and administrative proposals, producing information to inform decision-makers and advance our campaigns, and building strategic alliances and coalitions to lift up an amplified voice to create systemic change. The team also weighs in strategically on national and local issues to advance the needs of Heartland Alliance programs and participants. Areas of expertise include health care, financial security/asset building, human services/safety-net, criminal justice, and workers’ rights. The work of policy interns typically includes research and analysis to inform policy proposals and shape advocacy; monitoring state legislation; drafting materials for external communications including fact sheets and reports; and supporting the team’s special initiatives and events, such as planning and development of annual hearings on poverty, and periodic convenings on financial security.

Events Intern - Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat (Chicago)

Who: With 100,000 people moving into cities across the globe every day, the 21st century will truly be the century 
of the city. Humanity’s continued existence on this planet will rely on our ability to transform cities into dense, 
livable centers of innovation that reduce both land consumption and energy needs. In order to accommodate an 
additional 2.5 billion people in the world’s cities by 2050, the shapers of our urban landscapes will require guidance 
through access to expert research and resources that promote best practices for smarter cities. This is why the 
Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat’s (CTBUH) mission is critical to promoting a better urban future.

What: Intern will Assist with the general planning and coordination of the annual CTBUH International Conference; CTBUH Global Awards Program; and numerous other events.

Undergrad Regional Planning Summer Internship - Harvard Forest (Petersham, MA)

Who: The Harvard Forest Summer Research Program in Ecology is an opportunity for students to participate in 11 weeks of mentored, paid, independent research focusing on the effects of natural and human disturbances on forest ecosystems, including global climate change, hurricanes, forest harvest, and pest and pathogens.

What: The intern will synthesize existing regional plans in the Connecticut River Valley of Massachusetts, and in collaboration with two onsite conservationists and local stakeholders create a draft plan for the region.  The plan would be used by members of a possible/newly forming partnership interested in balancing land conservation, economic interests, agriculture, etc within the region.

Qualifications:

Data Science Fellowship - The Data Incubator

Who: The Data Incubator is a Cornell-funded data science training organization.

What: The Data Incubator is an intensive 8-week fellowship that prepares masters students, PhDs, and postdocs in STEM and social science fields seeking industry careers as data scientists. The program is free for Fellows and supported by sponsorships from hundreds of employers across multiple industries.

Qualifications:
