2023 Mayoral Fellowship Program - City of Chicago

The City of Chicago is excited to announce the 2023 Mayoral Fellowship Program. The Mayor’s Office Fellowship Program is the premier opportunity for bright, motivated, and civic-minded graduate students from all disciplines to apply their coursework and to learn more about public service. Two virtual info sessions for students will be held on Wed., Oct. 26 from 12:30– 1:30 p.m. and Thurs., Nov. 3 from 5– 6 p.m. The application deadline is Monday, November 7, 2022, 11:59 p.m. CT. The City of Chicago Mayor’s Office Fellowship Program provides an in-depth view of how city government operates. Fellows will have the opportunity to: 
  • Work directly with the Mayor’s senior staff
  • Research policies and evaluate their potential benefit to Chicago
  • Meet with Commissioners, Aldermen, senior-level staff from various City departments and sister agencies, community partners, and experts in a variety of policy fields
  • Draft memoranda on upcoming issues and new initiatives
  • Learn about the work and mission of the City’s departments through weekly presentations by department commissioners and senior level staff, and via guided tours of City facilities
  • Attend press conferences, City Council meetings, staff meetings, and strategic planning sessions
  • Develop “New Ideas” for City policies and initiatives

Through the Mayor's Office Fellowship Program, you may accomplish the following:  

  • Develop new initiatives that keep Chicago green
  • Research ways to keep Chicago affordable
  • Work on workforce development initiatives targeting specific industries
  • Build a new technology product that impacts residents' lives
  • Outline best practices in public safety programs and youth engagement
  • Research and compare housing-related policies in U.S. cities
  • Create innovative solutions to traffic and infrastructure challenges
  • Recommend ways to better integrate technology with City functions
  • Integrate human-centered design practices into digital services for residents
  • Analyze information on regional issues and Great Lakes policies
  • Create new programs that connect City residents with the great cultural resources of Chicago

Eligibility Criteria

The Chicago Mayor’s Office seeks a well-rounded cohort comprising Fellows with expertise in areas such as public policy, urban planning, public health, law, business, social work, or computer science. Graduate students from all disciplines are encouraged to apply. 

Required qualifications:

  • Be a currently enrolled graduate student at the time of employment
  • Have a cumulative GPA of at least 3.0 on a 4.0 scale
  • Reside within Chicago during the 11-week fellowship

Desired qualifications:

  • Demonstrate a strong commitment to excellence as evidenced by professional success, academic honors, leadership ability, extracurricular activities, and involvement in community or public service
  • Be enthusiastic about public service and city government
  • Embody strong personal character and conviction

Applying to the Summer 2023 Mayor’s Office Fellowship is a two-step process. All prospective fellows must complete Step 1 of the application process. Short-listed fellows will advance to Step 2. 

Step 1 (Due Monday, November 7, 2022): Prospective fellows must complete an initial application screening through the City of Chicago’s Department of Human Resources CAREERS website. Applicants will be asked to provide: 

  • Cover letter and resume
  • A letter of enrollment from their current graduate school
  • An official transcript from their current graduate school (For graduate students in their first year of study who have not yet received grades, an official dated letter of acceptance to your current school AND a current class schedule will be accepted in place of an official transcript) 

Step 1 of the application process will close on Monday, November 7, 2022 at 11:59 pm CT. No late applications will be accepted. Applications will be screened for eligibility and qualifications. A short-list of applicants will be selected for interviews and move on to Step 2.

Internship Program - Office of the Senator - Chicago, IL

The Senator’s Chicago office assists constituents in matters dealing with federal  services and provides outreach to constituent interest groups on behalf of the Senator.  The goal of the internship program is to provide students the opportunity to  understand and get involved with all aspects of the operation at the office, including  scheduling, constituent services, and press.

Senator Durbin’s Chicago office has three main departments where interns will be able to assist: Constituent Services, Scheduling, and Press. Below are descriptions of the three departments: 

Constituent Services 

In the Constituent Services department, interns will have the opportunity to help provide  assistance to the casework team. These experiences will allow interns to be active participants in  helping Illinois constituents with a wide range of matters dealing with federal agencies. More  specifically, your role would include:  

  • Reviewing constituent requests 

  • Updating office tracking system to reflect action on a case 

  • Reaching out to constituents when additional information is needed 

  • Drafting correspondence to the appropriate agency or constituent 

  • Drafting memos pertaining to various issues, organizations, and/or individuals 

  • Maintaining a database of organizations, meetings, and units of government 

Press 

The press team in Senator Durbin’s Chicago office is responsible for implementing and  overseeing all of the Senator’s news conferences and press events in Illinois. Interns will support  the press office by tracking news coverage, compiling daily press clips, and helping prepare for  in-state news conferences. Interns also handle a variety of miscellaneous projects that may  surface on a given day. Your role would include:  

  • Preparing daily press clips on relevant news and distributing to staff 

  • Maintaining and updating press distribution list 

  • Researching for potential press events or pressing constituent/community issues  

  • Making calls to local media outlets prior to press events to take attendance 

  • Transcribing statements from Senator Durbin following press events 

Scheduling  

Senator Durbin’s Illinois Scheduling Department receives hundreds of requests each month  throughout the state of Illinois. Through our scheduling department, interns will help to facilitate  these requests. Your role would include:  

  • Logging invitations in our calendar system 

  • Drafting regret letters for events the Senator cannot attend 

  • Writing event-related correspondence such as greeting letters 

  • Maintaining a database of past events and background materials 

  • Conducting research on various organizations and individuals for meeting requests

Overview

As an intern, you will work closely with our team of landscape architects and planners on a wide variety of commercial, institutional, and municipal planning and design projects. You will have the opportunity to participate in all stages of project development including community engagement, ordinance development, master planning, conceptual design, construction documentation, and construction administration. You may produce documents, reports, graphics, and materials for community outreach. Other responsibilities will include assisting project teams with compiling data and conducting research; and GIS mapping; preparation of conceptual site design plans, illustrations, and 3D visualizations; preparing quantity take-offs and cost estimates; assisting project managers with client meeting materials and presentation boards; and attending meetings.

‍Capstone Project

Our internship experience includes a capstone project where all interns will develop research or help solve real-world design challenges on a specific topic. At the conclusion of the program, interns will share their project and findings with the entire REA team.

What we’re looking for

We value individuals that bring a positive attitude and collaborative spirit. We desire students with strong written and verbal skills, and exceptional graphic, analysis, and digital production skills. Proficiency in Adobe Suite, 3-D modeling (3-D Max and/or SketchUp), ArcGIS, or AutoCAD. Those students that will be entering the final year of their degree and desire a 6 -12 month internship are strongly encouraged to apply.

Hiring Survey Interviewers for an Evaluation Project   


Job Description 

UIC’s Great Cities Institute (GCI) seeks to hire survey interviewers to conduct structured survey and narrative in-person interviews with persons served by four direct service programs as part of an evaluation study funded by the Illinois Criminal Justice Information Authority (ICJIA). Interviews will be conducted between November 2022 and April 2023.


Will likely conduct between ten and twenty interviews and work under direct supervision of a GCI supervisor. 


In-person interviews will be conducted at sites suitable to subjects and interviewer.


General Responsibilities: 

  • Work with GCI staff and interviewees to schedule interviews.

  • Review interview recordings with supervisor.

  • Participate in periodic training and supervision.


Minimum Acceptable Qualifications:

  • Strong ability to respond positively and flexibly during an interview or during scheduling.

  • Reliable transportation and reasonable proximity to Kankakee Illinois required.

  • Ability to schedule flexibly to accommodate interviewee needs


Additional Preferences:

Previous interviewing experience preferred.


Job Description for Survey Interviewer in Waukegan and LaSalle/Peru

This position will involve in-person narrative interviews with recovering persons in the Waukegan and LaSalle/Peru areas of Illinois. Interviewers will obtain information from subjects by means of interviews, most of which will be only partly scripted.  


Responsibilities: 

  • Conduct semi-structured in-person narrative interviews with clients of local substance use and justice-involvement recovery organizations.  Interviews will be conducted at organization offices or at mutually agreed-upon public sites.



Minimum Acceptable Qualifications:

  • Requires either 1) degree or significant coursework in fields of psychology, social work, sociology, counseling, or health care or 2) significant clinical experience.

  • Ability to conduct lengthy, semi-structured interviews, adapting to client responses while learning required information.

  • Strong interpersonal skills and demonstrated ability to interact with people sensitively around challenging topics.


Additional Preferences:

  • Knowledge of various therapeutic approaches such as motivational interviewing, person-centered therapy, trauma-informed care, and harm reduction.

  • Previous interviewing experience preferred.

  • Experience and/or training in peer-supported recovery, harm reduction, and support for persons with substance use or mental health disorders, and/or justice involvement.

Survey interviewers will conduct in-person interviews with high school students in the Kankakee School District 111.


Responsibilities: 

  • Conduct mostly scripted interviews with participants in youth empowerment programs operated by a public high school.  Interviews will be conducted at high school offices.


Minimum Acceptable Qualifications:

  • Requires either 1) degree or significant coursework in fields of psychology, education, social work, sociology, or counseling or 2) significant experience with youth development, youth counseling, or teaching.

  • Ability to conduct semi-scripted interviews, adapting to interviewee responses while learning required information.

  • Strong interpersonal skills and demonstrated ability to connect effectively with teens and interact with teens sensitively around challenging topics.

The Port Authority of New York & New Jersey’s Leadership Fellow Program is a distinguished program for graduate students who expect to receive their degree in Fall 2022 or Spring 2023.

The Leadership Fellow Program is a two-year rotational program that offers on-the-job experience in approximately four different business functions. Leadership Fellows have an opportunity to explore many different areas such as operations, finance, transportation, sustainability, etc. The Leadership Fellow Program is designed to build a strong foundation of business acumen, adaptability, and knowledge of the Port Authority as a whole.

Past Leadership Fellows have contributed to key regional capital programs, learned the nuts and bolts of policy development, and managed the challenges of daily operations at our transportation facilities. The breadth and depth of these experiences are critical in preparing Leadership Fellows to be future leaders within the agency.

Leadership Fellows are presented with a variety of developmental opportunities that range from one-on-one coaching to structured mentoring and various targeted training programs.

After successful completion of the program, Leadership Fellows will be considered for key positions in areas such as policy analysis, finance, capital programs, operations, or related business functions.

Qualifications:

General Skills

Leadership Fellows are selected based on academic achievement, analytical and communication skills, and work experience.

The selection process for the program is highly rigorous and consists of multiple rounds of interviews, including a qualitative interview, a competency-based panel interview, and multiple assessment exercises.

Academic Skills

Students graduating with a graduate degree in Fall 2022 or Spring 2023 are eligible to participate in the Program.

Candidates should possess a record of academic achievement in the areas of Public Administration, Business Administration, Public Policy, Urban Planning, Public Finance, Economics, Transportation Management, or a related discipline.

Desired:

Candidates must have a clear interest in a career in public service management

Candidates must demonstrate excellent problem solving, analytical, quantitative, written and oral communication, and interpersonal skills with a strong customer service orientation and political acumen.

Candidates must be flexible and enthusiastic about experiencing all the Port Authority has to offer, including areas that are not necessarily aligned with their professional backgrounds.

At least one year of work experience and/or internships in public service, transportation, government, or related fields is preferred
