Internship Program - Office of the Senator - Chicago, IL

The Senator’s Chicago office assists constituents in matters dealing with federal  services and provides outreach to constituent interest groups on behalf of the Senator.  The goal of the internship program is to provide students the opportunity to  understand and get involved with all aspects of the operation at the office, including  scheduling, constituent services, and press.

Applicants should submit their completed internship application form, cover letter,  resume, and a professional or academic reference with attention to Christian Huerta  and Celeste Gabinski through our website https://www.durbin.senate.gov/help/internships.

Our hybrid Spring 2023 Internship Program will be a mix between in-person and  virtual. Any questions regarding the application process or the program should be  directed to Christian Huerta at (312) 353-4952.

Senator Durbin’s Chicago office has three main departments where interns will be able to assist: Constituent Services, Scheduling, and Press. Below are descriptions of the three departments:

Constituent Services

In the Constituent Services department, interns will have the opportunity to help provide  assistance to the casework team. Press

The press team in Senator Durbin’s Chicago office is responsible for implementing and  overseeing all of the Senator’s news conferences and press events in Illinois. Interns will support  the press office by tracking news coverage, compiling daily press clips, and helping prepare for  in-state news conferences. Interns also handle a variety of miscellaneous projects that may  surface on a given day. Your role would include:

  • Preparing daily press clips on relevant news and distributing to staff

  • Maintaining and updating press distribution list

  • Researching for potential press events or pressing constituent/community issues

  • Making calls to local media outlets prior to press events to take attendance

  • Transcribing statements from Senator Durbin following press events

Scheduling

Senator Durbin’s Illinois Scheduling Department receives hundreds of requests each month  throughout the state of Illinois. Through our scheduling department, interns will help to facilitate  these requests. Your role would include:

  • Logging invitations in our calendar system

  • Drafting regret letters for events the Senator cannot attend

  • Writing event-related correspondence such as greeting letters

  • Maintaining a database of past events and background materials

  • Conducting research on various organizations and individuals for meeting requests
