The Senator’s Chicago office assists constituents in matters dealing with federal services and provides outreach to constituent interest groups on behalf of the Senator. The goal of the internship program is to provide students the opportunity to understand and get involved with all aspects of the operation at the office, including scheduling, constituent services, and press.

Senator Durbin’s Chicago office has three main departments where interns will be able to assist: Constituent Services, Scheduling, and Press. Below are descriptions of the three departments:
Constituent Services
In the Constituent Services department, interns will have the opportunity to help provide assistance to the casework team. These experiences will allow interns to be active participants in helping Illinois constituents with a wide range of matters dealing with federal agencies. More specifically, your role would include:
Reviewing constituent requests
Updating office tracking system to reflect action on a case
Reaching out to constituents when additional information is needed
Drafting correspondence to the appropriate agency or constituent
Drafting memos pertaining to various issues, organizations, and/or individuals
Maintaining a database of organizations, meetings, and units of government
Press
The press team in Senator Durbin’s Chicago office is responsible for implementing and overseeing all of the Senator’s news conferences and press events in Illinois. Interns will support the press office by tracking news coverage, compiling daily press clips, and helping prepare for in-state news conferences. Interns also handle a variety of miscellaneous projects that may surface on a given day. Your role would include:
Preparing daily press clips on relevant news and distributing to staff
Maintaining and updating press distribution list
Researching for potential press events or pressing constituent/community issues
Making calls to local media outlets prior to press events to take attendance
Transcribing statements from Senator Durbin following press events
Scheduling
Senator Durbin’s Illinois Scheduling Department receives hundreds of requests each month throughout the state of Illinois. Through our scheduling department, interns will help to facilitate these requests. Your role would include:
Logging invitations in our calendar system
Drafting regret letters for events the Senator cannot attend
Writing event-related correspondence such as greeting letters
Maintaining a database of past events and background materials
Conducting research on various organizations and individuals for meeting requests
