Information Technology Intern, CMAP

Who: Chicago Metropolitan Agency for Planning

What: The Chicago Metropolitan Agency for Planning (CMAP) is hiring an intern in the Information Technology Division.  The intern will be responsible for providing technical support within the IT division as well as providing first-level technical expertise, advice, and support to all CMAP staff.  Duties for this position includes; providing help desk user support to staff. Assisting with fundamental operations of commonly used software, hardware, and other equipment.  Perform hardware upgrades (memory installs, hard drive upgrades).  Install desktops, laptops, monitors, printers, and other IT related equipment. Assist with configuring and deploying desktop computers and laptops.  Assist in the research and documentation of CMAP computer systems. This internship opportunity will be remote and selected candidate must have personal laptop to use.

Qualifications and skills 

Applicants should have a working knowledge of common operating systems and software applications including Windows 10 and Microsoft Office (i.e., 2016, O365).  Must possess the ability to communicate effectively with team members.  Basic understanding of computers and computer networking is also required.  Knowledge in databases (i.e.,  Microsoft Access, SQL, etc.) is desired, but not required. 

Education and experience

Undergraduate applicants must be entering their junior or senior year in Fall 2021.  Current enrollment in a Bachelor or Masters’ degree program in Computer Science, Business Administration, or Information Systems is recommended.  It is important that applicants have a general understanding of personal computers, printers, troubleshooting, and Microsoft Office software.

Internship timeframe

Internship is from October 2021 through September 2022.   Minor start and end-date accommodations may be made upon request.

Student Internship, 44th Ward (Chicago)

Who: Ward 44, Chicago, IL (Tom Tunney)

Responsibilities: 

  • Processing constituent and city service requests
  • Selling guest parking passes
  • Fielding constituent and city phone calls
  • Assisting with projects
  • Attending selected CAPS and community meetings with staff
  • Updating 44th Ward website
  • Miscellaneous clerical work (letters, filing, faxing, copying)

Graduate Assistantship, Digital Scholarship Lab (UIC Daley Library)

Who: UIC Daley Library

What: The University Library is seeking qualified graduate student(s) to provide instructional, research and operational support of a newly formed Digital Scholarship Labin the Richard J. Daley Library.  The lab supports the incorporation of technologies such as augmented and virtual reality, data and text mining, geographic information systems(GIS), multimedia, podcasting, 3D printing and scanning, etc., across all disciplines including humanities, sciences, health sciences, social sciences and liberal arts.  This position is a good fit for a graduate student who seeks the challenges and opportunities that multi-disciplinary and non-traditional scholarship provide and who not only wishes to learn, but to share their knowledge with others. The ideal candidate will have an academic background in any discipline but has experience in incorporating technology into their scholarship and a desire to help others explore creative and innovative tools for their scholarship.

Duties: The Graduate student will work with the Scholarly Communication Librarian and other library faculty and staff in supporting the UIC community to develop and integrate technology into their individual learning, teaching, and research.  The Graduate student will develop and deliver workshops, consult with UIC researchers and students, and play an integral role in the development, management, and maintenance of the Digital Scholarship HubWhile some in-person work will be required, workshops and consults may be conducted virtually when possible.

Qualifications: Successful candidates will demonstrate a clear understanding of any combination of concepts including databases; or, data analytics; or, data visualization; geographic information systems; or, quantitative and qualitative data analysis; or podcasting.   They will have experience or knowledge in a number of the following: Lexo; or, Gephi; or, Google Data Studio; or, NLTK; or, Leaflet; or, MyHeatMap; or, Plotly; or, Python; or, R; or SAS; or, SPSS; or, Tableauor, MALLET; or podcasting software; or sufficient knowledge in similar tools to be able to learn quickly.
