Job Descriptions/Duties:
The Madison County Council of Governments (MCCOG) is hiring one full-time intern for the summer of 2022, with the intention of transitioning the position into a Graduate Assistantship. The candidate should generally be available between May 1, 2022, and April 30, 2023. The position will be 35 hours per week during the summer and follow Graduate Assistantship requirements during the school year. The position will have the ability to operate in a remote capacity but may need to visit the office during the summer for equipment requirements. Should the candidate prefer to work in the office, an appropriate workstation and equipment will be provided.
This internship is for aspiring transportation-oriented students looking for an opportunity to gain professional work experience and training in transportation planning and engineering. The intern should have a substantial interest in the analysis of transportation systems, with a focus on multi-modal planning and developing context sensitive solutions where appropriate.
Review of applications will commence in March 2022 and will continue until the position is filled.
General Responsibilities
Under supervision of the Principal Transportation Planner, assist the Transportation Planning Team on a variety of assignments, such as:
• Developing transportation plans, analysis, and/or ordinances.
• Conducting basic research and data collection.
• Compiling data for corridor and operations studies.
• Conducting field work as assigned.
Specific Project Description
Under supervision of the Principal Transportation Planner, the primary work will include a three-stage project:
1) Conduct an audit & update process of the MCCOG Model Inventory of Roadway Elements (MIRE) within ArcGIS Pro.
2) Utilize the updated MIRE data to overhaul the MCCOG Road Diet Tool for identifying potential road right-sizing project applications.
3) Assist the Transportation Planning Team in the update & development of a joint Regional Bicycle & Pedestrian Facilities Plan, with a direct role in ensuring the integration of the Road Diet Tool results.
Basic Qualifications
• Enrollment in accredited undergraduate or graduate program in Urban and Regional Planning, Civil Engineering, or similar.
• Working knowledge of ESRI ArcGIS and Microsoft Office suite.
• Knowledge of college level mathematical concepts.
