Hourly Research Associate - UIC Institute for Health Research and Policy

Who: The Institute for Health Research and Policy at the University of Illinois at Chicago is conducting a multi-year project to examine the impact of public health policies on environmental factors and diet.

What: The Institute is seeking to hire eight Research Hourly-Research Associate I to collect observational data in three locations in the continental U.S. This temporary hourly position will include a week training and two weeks of data collection, May–June 2019. The position will pay an hourly rate of $23.63, without benefits. There is no guaranteed minimum number of hours per week. Research Associates will typically work 40 hours per week and will spend a majority of time collecting data in a variety of environments. Individuals will travel by plane and then rental car to various locations. Paid hotel accommodations will be booked for the duration of data collection and, in some cases, weekend stays will be required. In each community, individuals will be required to travel by car/on foot to conduct observational research.
In this position you will:
  • Collect data from food stores and fast-food restaurants on product prices, availability and marketing. 
  • Work in teams of two 
  • Locate food store and fast-food outlets in each community, and complete detailed survey forms about each location;
  • Work closely under UIC supervision to collect and organize field data; and 
  • Participate in regular debriefing calls and web-based and/or in-person meetings with UIC research teams.
Qualifications:
  • Bachelor degree; 
  • Required participation in paid training session May 2019 and data collection in June 2019. 
  • Experience with navigating cities and familiarity with travel around the country 
  • Very strong organizational skills; 
  • High attention to detail and ability to follow specific protocols; 
  • Strong interpersonal communication skills, and an ability to work with others in close environment; 
  • Basic computer literacy in Word as well as the Internet;
  • Must be self-motivated and be able to work without daily supervision; and 
  • Must be an energetic and enthusiastic collaborative team player. 
 Desired qualifications:
  • Previous experience with national fieldwork or observational data collection; and 
  • Understanding of survey research and data collection.
