Urban Ecology Fellow - National Park Service

Who: National Park Service

What: The National Park Service’s Rivers, Trails & Conservation Assistance (RTCA) Program in partnership with the Hispanic Access Foundation is seeking a candidate with an academic or professional background in environmental or natural resource studies to work in Chicago, Illinois on a full-time, temporary basis for 11 months. This position will assist National Park Service staff with supporting outdoor recreation and natural resource conservation projects in local communities. The Hispanic Access Foundation is a national nonprofit organization that connects Latinos to partner organizations and opportunities that improve lives and create an equitable society.


Desired Skills and Qualifications:
  • U.S. Citizen, National, or Lawful Permanent Resident Alien required. Candidate selected for the position will undergo a government background check. Valid driver’s license (preferred).
  • Undergraduate or Graduate degree in Ecology, Natural Resources, or Environmental Science (or a related field) and an interest in Urban Ecology or Urban Wildlife.
  • Local candidates or individuals with previous community ties to the Chicago metropolitan region are preferred.
  • Proficiency with using ESRI ArcGIS software for mapping.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines simultaneously.

Assignments May Include:
  • Facilitate community outreach and engagement meetings.
  • Assist with developing planning documents, concept plans, and written reports.
  • Assist with efforts to create plans for wildlife habitat, green infrastructure, green space, and natural areas.
  • GIS mapping and existing conditions analysis.
  • Creating project presentations and graphic displays.
  • Working with partner organizations on habitat restoration activities and project planning.
  • Analyzing wildlife monitoring data.
  • Conducting field work outdoors in varying climate and weather conditions.

Start Date: Flexible, starting in January, 2020.

Benefits: This is a 47 week, full-time internship with the National Park Service offered through the Hispanic Access Foundation. Fellows receive a $480/week pay stipend, $400/month housing stipend, health insurance, relocation allowance, and paid professional development opportunities. Candidates that successfully complete the program also become eligible for Public Land Corps hiring authority. The position will work out of a campus office at the University of Illinois at Chicago with frequent outdoor field work and occasional day and multi-day trips outside of the Chicago metropolitan area.
