Urban Planner Intern - Collins engineers, Inc.

What: Collins Engineers is looking to hire for a part-time paid internship within the CDOT Project Coordination Office (PCO).

Who: The PCO’s mission is to relieve the burden on the citizens of Chicago by creating an environment in which stakeholders performing public and private construction can do so collaboratively, openly, efficiently, safely, and with minimal disruption to the public. The internship is an excellent opportunity to experience the planning process for Chicago's Transportation and Infrastructure projects.

TYPICAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned. Compiles reports.

  • Properly checks other employee’s calculations. 
  • Uses computer assisted engineering and design software and equipment to prepare engineering and design documents.
  • Field work will be required.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE: Junior or senior working towards a Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering from an accredited four-year college.

LANGUAGE SKILLS: Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write technical reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, and the general public.

REASONING ABILITY: Ability to define problems, collect data, evaluate facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit; stand; use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls, reach with hands and arms, and talk or hear. The employee is occasionally required to walk, sit, climb or balance, and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee may be required to lift and/or move up to 25 pounds, and occasionally lift and/or move up to 125 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. While in the field, the employee may be required to walk in rugged conditions, work in adverse weather conditions, and stand up to eight hours or more at a time.
