Summer Internship, Global Urbanization - OECD (Paris)

Who: The mission of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) is to promote policies that will improve the economic and social well-being of people around the world. The OECD provides a forum in which governments can work together to share experiences and seek solutions to common problems. We work with governments to understand what drives economic, social and environmental change. We measure productivity and global flows of trade and investment. We analyse and compare data to predict future trends. We set international standards on a wide range of things, from agriculture and tax to the safety of chemicals.

What: The OECD’s Centre for Entrepreneurship, SMEs, Regions and Cities is hiring a summer intern to contribute to a research project on global urbanisation. The project aims at providing a comprehensive overview of global urbanisation since 1975 using a new and innovative dataset of all cities across the world. The selected candidate will support the work of a team of economists/policy analysts. In line with his/her qualifications, he/she will be expected to contribute to the project through:

  • Cleaning and processing data and developing indicators on urbanisation
  • Collecting auxiliary data from varying sources
  • Conducting econometric analyses describing the evolution of cities across the world over time
  • Creating charts, figures and maps visualising the data
  • Drafting short texts describing the results
  • Preparing presentations, talking points and speeches describing the analyses
  • Organising events related to the project
Qualifications: The successful candidate must have:
  • Experience in working microeconometric methods to analyse data and solid knowledge of a modern statistical software package (e.g. Stata, R)
  • Proven ability to draft clearly and concisely
  • Completed or nearly completed Master’s degree in economics, economic geography or a related discipline with a strong focus on quantitative analysis
The ideal candidate also has:
  • Knowledge of urban economics or related fields
  • Knowledge of GIS and experience in working with spatial/remote sensing data
  • Experience in data visualisation through figures and maps
  • Proven experience in drafting academic papers and/or policy reports
How to apply: Interested candidates are invited to send their CVs and a relevant writing sample (e.g. thesis, working paper, term paper, policy paper) to abel.schumann@oecd.org, mentioning their availability and preferred contract duration. Candidate selection will take place in early May and successful candidates will be informed in mid-May.
