Transportation Data Intern - Northwest Center - Chicago

POSITION OVERVIEW
The Transportation Data Intern is part of the Northwest Center’s Community Organizing Team, and joins a team of knowledgeable, empathetic people who are passionate about helping community members keep their homes. The Transportation Data Intern assists in mapping projects to inform our transportation organizing work as well as hosts, plans and attends events. The role will be 25% data-related and 75% organizing-related.

YOU BRING
  • Preferred Bilingual Proficiency (preferably Spanish/English)
  • Basic working knowledge of organizing work, including door knocking/canvassing, community conversations, event planning and more
  • Proficient knowledge of arcGIS
  • Proficient use of data entry and survey software
  • Effective written and oral communication skills
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, self-directed atmosphere
  • Ability to work in a team setting with other individuals and groups
  • A friendly, patient, and professional attitude
  • A minimum basic understanding of racial equity, specifically the ways in which communities of color are disproportionately impacted by racialized capitalism and white supremacist culture
YOU’LL DO
  • Work in arcGIS to map survey questions and other publicly available data to be included in reports and inform our organizing work.
  • Work with our Data and Evaluation Manager to prepare reports, collect survey data, and other data collection as needed.
  • Attend weekly bike rides (summer) and weekly online bike forums (winter) and coordinate data entry at those events
  • Coordinate day-to-day data activities for transportation events, such as weekly bike rides, online forums, in-person town halls, and resident/business owner meetings
  • Assist in set up and planning of transportation events, such as weekly bike rides, online forums, in-person town halls, and resident/business owner meetings
  • Support Data and Evaluation Manager with other duties/tasks as needed
  • Community outreach to residents and stakeholders through surveying, focus groups and interviews; assisting with weekly community biking rides and discussions in person and online. Outreach will include working with Transit Ambassadors through phone calls, flyer distribution, and speaking about Northwest Center work during weekly bike rides and online formatting. Surveying will be over the phone or in-person through direct business visitations.
  • Represent NWC at external events, seminars, and networking functions as needed.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
  • Given the changing nature of work as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, we have developed a comprehensive list of COVID-19 policies to prioritize keeping our community and team safe.
  • Our team is currently operating in a hybrid work environment that includes in-office and remote work. Schedules are arranged by position to maximize flexibility and the need of the position
  • This position operates primarily in an office environment that is fully accessible and routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, printers, copiers, filing cabinets, and fax machines.
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to converse and exchange information, and will frequently need to move/traverse. The employee will operate office technology and equipment, and may occasionally move/transport objects up to 25-40 pounds.
  • The nature of our community-based work often involves evening and weekend obligations, and some travel to off-site locations in the Chicago metro area.
  • Our workplace is a non-smoking and drug-free environment
  • This position will require work on some evenings and weekends, schedule can vary depending on the needs of the agency
