Title: Transportation and Mobility Fellow
Type: 300 – 600 hours over the eight-month assignment
Location: Evanston, IL
The City of Evanston aspires to be recognized as a world-class leader for providing and coordinating a full array of quality mobility transportation options with innovation, integrity, and teamwork.
This temporary role offers flexible scheduling and is expected to work between 300 – 600 hours over the eight-month assignment. The responsibilities are focused on coordinating community engagement and supporting transportation policy development through a blend of community outreach, data management, and program and policy development. Key responsibilities include coordinating in-person public events, developing communication materials to promote city mobility programs, and researching transportation policies.
This role has the potential for hybrid work with a focus on onsite outreach and office work.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS (Specific assignment will include some or all of the following):
- Community outreach and programming coordination
- In-person outreach, including "tabling" at community events
- Communications materials development
- Social media content development
- Engagement metric tracking
- Outreach-schedule and external partner coordination
- Initiative and program promotion through in person, online, and other innovative channels
- Support with operational and administrative aspects of community programming
- Providing mentorship and oversight to high school-aged interns at public events
- Administration, Data collection, policy development, research, and grant writing
- Support with grant writing for new or recurring programs
- Support with general administration and system organizing
- Tracking outreach and engagement metrics
- Support with the completion of Evanston's Bicycle Parking Policy and 2026 rack implementation
Researching and drafting transportation programs, policies, and procedures
Performs other duties as assigned.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS OF WORK:
Must possess a bachelor's degree or four years of experience performing administration for community programs or doing community engagement work in a professional setting.
Must be willing and able to work in a limited-term position that does not provide fringe benefits like accrued time off.
Knowledge, skills, and abilities in the following areas:
Self-starter, able to work independently and take leadership in a team environment
Interest in the transportation and mobility subject area and knowledge of trends in active transportation, micromobility, and complete streets.
Ability to research policy and program precedents.
Excellent leadership and communication skills.
Skill in the use of personal computers and related software applications, specifically, Google Suite, Asana, and Zoom.
Ability to use web-based applications and spreadsheet databases; Geographic Information Systems (GIS) skills are beneficial
Strong organizational and project organization skills.
Ability to speak with clarity to members of the community in an approachable and warm manner
Strong written and interpersonal communication skills in dealing with individuals and groups at various levels.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS OF WORK:
The ability to work in a primarily sedentary position, with the ability to occasionally use force to exert up to 10 pounds. The ability to lift, carry, or otherwise move objects, books, materials, etc., using up to 25 pounds of force frequently and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects. Subject to inside and outside weather conditions.
SUPERVISION:
Work is performed under the general supervision of the Transportation and Mobility Coordinator; work responsibilities are done in coordination with other City Departments. Supervision is exercised over high school-aged intern staff during certain outreach activities.
PUBLIC CONTACT:
The employee has regular and frequent contact with department and division employees and other City employees, as well as with individual citizens and groups. Outreach during evening events and on the weekends is part of the scope of this position.
