2020 Thomas J. O’Bryant Transportation Policy & Finance Fellowship - Eno Center for Transportation

Who: Eno Center for Transportation

What: The Eno Center for Transportation is now accepting applications for its Summer 2020 Thomas J. O’Bryant Transportation Policy Fellowship. This fellowship provides a high-quality professional development opportunity for aspiring transportation specialists. Successful applicants will gain in-depth knowledge of transportation policy and practice under the guidance of Eno staff.

Responsibilities
  • Assisting in the development of Eno publications and products. Fellows play an integral part in the research and development of transportation research documents, policy recommendations, and events. Projects cover all modes, sectors, and levels of government within transportation. 
  • Contributing to the premier transportation publication: Eno Transportation Weekly (ETW). Fellows cover transportation-related hearings on Capitol Hill, analyze legislation, and develop think pieces and other commentary for ETW. 
  • Bridging the gap between research and policy. Fellows participate in Eno’s outreach through participation in conferences, briefings, and private meetings. 
  • Gaining in-depth knowledge of U.S. policymaking. Fellows engage the policymaking community through association with the Board of Directors, Eno education programs, and briefings to policymakers.
Duration

Duration of the appointment is 10 weeks (start/end dates to be determined by successful candidate and Eno staff.)

Qualifications

Fellowships are awarded to students with a bachelor’s degree, master’s degree, and Ph.D. working in transportation, engineering, housing, urban planning, or related degrees. Fellows must have already developed research skills and a strong writing ability.

Compensation

Fellows are paid a stipend of $2,250 per month.

Safety Data Fellow (for post-grads within 3 years) - US Dept. of Transportation

Who: A post-graduate research project and developmental opportunity is currently available at the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Office of the Secretary of Transportation. The appointment will be served within the Office of the Assistant Secretary for Transportation Policy in the Office of Policy Development, Strategic Planning, and Performance in Washington, DC as a Safety Data Fellow (participant).
The Office of Policy Development, Strategic Planning, and Performance supports the Under Secretary of Transportation for Policy and Assistant Secretary for Transportation Policy in policy matters affecting all aspects of transportation. The office provides technical expertise for the Department’s legislative, regulatory and research programs, conducts analyses and recommends policies, and serves as the Departmental focal point for initiatives related to safety across all transportation modes.

What: The appointment will be supporting the Safety Data Initiative (SDI), and the goal of the project is to develop DOT’s data-driven approach to decision making as it relates to safety issues with implications across the modes of transportation (highway, rail, air, water, and pipeline). The participant will collaborate with individuals from DOT’s operating administrations and offices under the Secretary of Transportation, such as the Office of the Chief Information Officer, to connect, understand, analyze, and visualize DOT safety databases, data sources outside of the Department, and geospatial data. The work will foster increased DOT use of data to inform programmatic and policy decisions, and further demonstrate the value of a cross-modal approach through the power of data analytics and visualization.

Transportation Planner Intern - Sam Schwartz Consulting (Chicago)

Who: Sam Schwartz Consulting, LLC (Sam Schwartz) is a transportation planning, engineering, and environmental firm. Our Chicago office leads our national planning practice, which works with cities across the US and Canada to help them develop more holistic, multi-modal, and people-oriented transportation systems. Our team specializes in citywide and neighborhood transportation master plans, modal plans, strategic planning, policy development, and implementing new mobility systems. Strong technical work, innovative data analysis, clear communication, and thoughtful stakeholder engagement are the cornerstones of our approach.

What: Sam Schwartz is seeking candidates to specialize in our technical planning and design work who are motivated to bring a high standard of rigor and creativity to the role. You will work on projects touching all modes of transportation and involving all aspects of planning from corridor design, to network and service planning, to policy and program development.

Volunteer Research Assistant (Transportation) - Metropolitan Planning Council

Who: Metropolitan Planning Council - Transportation Team

What: The MPC transportation team is currently looking for a Research Assistant (RA) for Summer 2018, possibly continuing into the fall. This position will include support on a range of technical analyses, stakeholder coordination, and advocacy oriented projects. Responsibilities will include: conduct technical research, conduct literature reviews, document meetings, conduct data analysis in Excel, develop GIS maps, prepare for and participate in meetings.
