The Mayor’s Office Fellowship Program is the premier opportunity for bright, motivated, and civic-minded graduate students from all disciplines to apply their coursework to the greatest municipal laboratory in the world: the City of Chicago. Fellows serve the people of Chicago by supporting policy, legislative, data, communications, and public engagement initiatives within city government.
By working hand-in-hand with senior staff in the Office of the Mayor and leaders from various departments and sister agencies throughout the city, Fellows deliver recommendations and implement programs that improve the lives of Chicago’s 2.7 million residents.
 
Objectives
Through the Mayor's Office Fellowship Program, you may accomplish the following:
 
  • Develop new initiatives that keep Chicago green;
  • Research ways to keep Chicago affordable;
  • Work on workforce development initiatives targeting specific industries; 
  • Outline best practices in public safety programs and youth engagement; 
  • Research and compare housing-related policies in U.S. cities;
  • Create innovative solutions to traffic and infrastructure challenges;
  • Recommend ways to better integrate technology with City functions; 
  • Analyze information on regional issues and Great Lakes policies;
  • Create new programs that connect City residents with the great cultural resources of Chicago.
 
Nature of the Program
The City of Chicago Mayor's Office Fellowship Program offers fellowships to students interested in learning about City government and public policy. The program provides an in-depth view of how City government operates. Fellows will have the opportunity to:
 
  • Work directly with the Mayor's senior staff;
  • Research policies and evaluate their potential benefit to Chicago;
  • Meet with Commissioners, Aldermen, senior-level staff from various City departments and sister agencies, community partners, and experts in a variety of policy fields;
  • Draft memoranda on upcoming issues and new initiatives;
  • Learn about the work and mission of the City's departments through weekly presentations by department commissioners and senior level staff, and via guided tours of City facilities;
  • Attend press conferences, City Council hearings, staff meetings, and strategic planning sessions; and
  • Develop "New Ideas" for policies and initiatives. 
 
NOTE:  This is a temporary, summer position. Internships are limited to a max. of one academic year.  Students are limited to working one internship (lasting no more than one academic year) per City Department.
 
THIS POSITION IS EXEMPT FROM THE CAREER SERVICE
 

Qualifications

 
 
  • Must be a graduate student in good academic standing throughout the duration of the Program, currently enrolled in an accredited college, university or law school with a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.0 on a 4.0 grading scale or a 4.0 on a 5.0 grading scale.
  • Candidates' must have demonstrated a substantial commitment to excellence as evidenced by academic honors leadership ability, extracurricular activities and involvement in community or public service.
  • Students must maintain the required GPA throughout the duration of their employment/internship.
  • Proficiency using Microsoft Office Applications - Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
  • Must be enrolled in school with a minimum of 6 credit hours (or quarter hour equivalency) before and after the duration of Program. (Note: We will not accept students who plan on graduating prior to the commencement of the internship)

Community Development Intern, Village of Willmette

Who: Village of Wilmette

What: The Village of Wilmette is seeking an intern for an exciting new opportunity to become involved in the business development of the community. The intern will work an average of 20 hours per work during business hours at the Village Hall, 1200 Wilmette Avenue, Wilmette, IL. The Village Hall is open for business on Monday to Friday from 7:30am to 4:30pm.

The Metra Train Station is steps away from the building as well as available parking spaces for anyone driving to work. The Village has many new businesses and commercial development projects and recently began a rewrite of the Comprehensive Plan that is expected to last through 2023.


General Responsibilities

The Community Development intern will work under the general supervision of the Business Development Coordinator and will assist in performing a wide variety of community and business development functions, including customer service, mailings, data entry, research, plan reviews and surveys. This position will be responsible for following up with compliance on issued violations, and act as the liaison between businesses and village departments for service complaints (such as garbage pickup, utility services, and sidewalks). In addition, this position will help create social media content for WilmetteBiz and assist with the Compressive Plan by communicating between residents, businesses and consultant and other work tasks as assigned.

Position Requirements

The successful candidate will be enrolled in a Community Development, Urban Planning or a related college program and have an interest in pursuing a career in local government. The candidate must have a valid driver’s license, the ability to work in a fast-paced environment and strong customer service, communication and organizational skills. Working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook and Teams). Experience with graphic design software including Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, and Acrobat Pro is a plus.

The successful candidate shall be fully vaccinated with the COVID-19 vaccine and shall provide their COVID-19 Vaccination Record Card which shall be retained by the Village.

Compensation

The wage is $17.63 per hour. There are no other fringe benefits associated with this position.

Information Technology Intern, CMAP

Who: Chicago Metropolitan Agency for Planning

What: The Chicago Metropolitan Agency for Planning (CMAP) is hiring an intern in the Information Technology Division.  The intern will be responsible for providing technical support within the IT division as well as providing first-level technical expertise, advice, and support to all CMAP staff.  Duties for this position includes; providing help desk user support to staff. Assisting with fundamental operations of commonly used software, hardware, and other equipment.  Perform hardware upgrades (memory installs, hard drive upgrades).  Install desktops, laptops, monitors, printers, and other IT related equipment. Assist with configuring and deploying desktop computers and laptops.  Assist in the research and documentation of CMAP computer systems. This internship opportunity will be remote and selected candidate must have personal laptop to use.

Qualifications and skills 

Applicants should have a working knowledge of common operating systems and software applications including Windows 10 and Microsoft Office (i.e., 2016, O365).  Must possess the ability to communicate effectively with team members.  Basic understanding of computers and computer networking is also required.  Knowledge in databases (i.e.,  Microsoft Access, SQL, etc.) is desired, but not required. 

Education and experience

Undergraduate applicants must be entering their junior or senior year in Fall 2021.  Current enrollment in a Bachelor or Masters’ degree program in Computer Science, Business Administration, or Information Systems is recommended.  It is important that applicants have a general understanding of personal computers, printers, troubleshooting, and Microsoft Office software.

Internship timeframe

Internship is from October 2021 through September 2022.   Minor start and end-date accommodations may be made upon request.

Graduate Assistantship, Digital Scholarship Lab (UIC Daley Library)

What: The University Library is seeking qualified graduate student(s) to provide instructional, research and operational support of a newly formed Digital Scholarship Labin the Richard J. Daley Library.  The lab supports the incorporation of technologies such as augmented and virtual reality, data and text mining, geographic information systems(GIS), multimedia, podcasting, 3D printing and scanning, etc., across all disciplines including humanities, sciences, health sciences, social sciences and liberal arts.  This position is a good fit for a graduate student who seeks the challenges and opportunities that multi-disciplinary and non-traditional scholarship provide and who not only wishes to learn, but to share their knowledge with others. The ideal candidate will have an academic background in any discipline but has experience in incorporating technology into their scholarship and a desire to help others explore creative and innovative tools for their scholarship.

Duties: The Graduate student will work with the Scholarly Communication Librarian and other library faculty and staff in supporting the UIC community to develop and integrate technology into their individual learning, teaching, and research.  The Graduate student will develop and deliver workshops, consult with UIC researchers and students, and play an integral role in the development, management, and maintenance of the Digital Scholarship Hub. While some in-person work will be required, workshops and consults may be conducted virtually when possible.

Qualifications: Successful candidates will demonstrate a clear understanding of any combination of concepts including databases; or, data analytics; or, data visualization; geographic information systems; or, quantitative and qualitative data analysis; or podcasting.   They will have experience or knowledge in a number of the following: Lexo; or, Gephi; or, Google Data Studio; or, NLTK; or, Leaflet; or, MyHeatMap; or, Plotly; or, Python; or, R; or SAS; or, SPSS; or, Tableau; or, MALLET; or podcasting software; or sufficient knowledge in similar tools to be able to learn quickly.

Internship, Office of the Lieutenant Governor

What: The JEO Initiative is accepting an intern to work closely with Initiative staff on key projects, including implementation of the Restore, Reinvest and Renew (R3) grant program, the establishment of more robust reentry systems, and the planning process for events hosted by the office and the Lieutenant Governor’s public engagements

Responsibilities:

  • Assist with writing briefs and talking points for the Lieutenant Governor
  • Assist with planning for the office’s criminal justice-focused events
  • Conduct policy and legislative research

What: For this role, an intern will need to live within a reasonable commute of the office in Rosemont, IL. They will have the opportunity to participate in all aspects of commercial real estate acquisition, operations, and investments, and can expect to be staffed on multiple transactions at once. Due to the relatively small size of the investment team, an intern will “wear many hats” and will be expected to assist on job functions related to acquisitions, financing and investor relations.

 The Intern will have the following primary responsibilities:

 
•                   Market Research – Including data mining.
•                   Correspondence – Provide research for responses.
•                   Meeting Management - Including preparing notes and  distributing action items.
•                   Development of Presentation Materials - Emphasis on GIS mapping.

 

Qualifications: 

Strong GIS skills as one of the most important projects will be mapping our target acquisition markets with layered information including site details, zoning, wetlands, flood plain, etc.
