Intern - Deputy Assessor - Township of Schaumburg, IL

Position Overview: Intern-Deputy Assessor I
Department: Assessor’s Office
Reports to: Chief Deputy Assessor
Hourly rate: $21.41
Status: Part-Time Non-Exempt
Date: January 2023

Position Summary:
Implement data entry of property information including clerical corrections, homeowner exemptions, residents freeze exemptions, senior exemptions, ownership, and address changes, as others required. Respond and route calls to the appropriate office or department director. Communicate with the public to provide information, explain procedures, and answer a wide variety of questions in multiple tax scenarios. High level of professionalism with strong managerial, leadership, and administrative skills. Ability to communicate with a diverse population and explain complicated assessment details to the public. Able to work effectively and efficiently with people in a courteous, understanding manner.

Hours: 8:30 AM- 3:15 PM. Monday through Friday, hours will fluctuate based on demand.

Essential Functions:
  • Perform data entry of real property information including clerical corrections, homeowner exemptions, senior freeze exemptions, senior exemptions, et al., ownership and address changes, and other changes as required.
  • Answer the telephone and route calls to the appropriate office or individual in the Township.
  • Perform basic data analyses, queries, and spreadsheets.
  • Excellent understanding of all aspects of the Assessor’s office, and programs that it administers to serve the public and other county departments.
  • Assist the public with the completion of required forms, and other property information at the public’s request. During the time of appeals, must be available to work extended hours or weekends.
  • Attend meetings, seminars, and training sessions as designated yearly.
  • Review deeds and other legal documents concerning property ownership within the county with accuracy.
  • Requires ability to use Windows, Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook.
  • Assist other departments and other duties as needed.

Other Job Functions and Abilities:

  • Capability to utilize computer database, word processing, spreadsheet, and other programs as required.
  • Able to interpret legal documents, and legal descriptions.
  • Perform basic mathematical calculations involving decimals and percentages.
  • Complete tasks assigned independently
  • Ability to work accurately with great attention to detail.
  • Excellent written and oral communications skills (active listening, interpersonal skills, diplomacy)
  • Demonstrate a professional and cooperative manner toward the public and co-workers.
  • Multi-task and handle interruptions while working with complex and/or time-sensitive projects.
Qualifications:
  • Acceptance and current participation as a full-time, part-time student in an accredited bachelor’s or graduate degree program in finance, accounting, or a closely business-related field
  • Proficient with current computer technology, job-related software, and customer service systems
  • The candidate screening process may consist of an application review, skills testing, employability assessment, interviews, reference checks, and other job-related testing or verifications
  • Chosen candidates will be subject to a background and criminal history investigation
  • This position assists the Assessor’s Department with a variety of projects and day-to-day activities hours based on a 15-to-35.7-hour workweek
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office, including a variety of different programs like Excel, PowerPoint, and Access.
  • Knowledge and understanding of local community resources, accounting, and programs
  • Demonstrate leadership abilities, including initiative, ability to work independently, and ability to effectively handle emergencies
  • Capability to effectively manage and complete projects simultaneously, under tight time constraints
  • Organizational skills with the ability to establish and maintain a professional level of competence with members of the public, media, not-for-profits, community groups, and other government agencies
  • Possess and utilize tact, diplomacy, and discretion when dealing with sensitive or confidential matters
  • Ability to lift 23-30 pounds involving bending and overhead lifting

Special Requirements/ License/Certification:
  • To obtain the Certified Illinois Assessing Officer (C.I.A.O) with the Illinois Property Assessment annual certification within a year of hire.

Physical Demands:
  • Physical demands refer to the level and duration of physical exertion generally required to perform critical tasks in support of critical job functions, for example - sitting, standing, walking, lifting, carrying, reaching, pushing, and pulling files.

Environmental Conditions:
