Community Development Intern - Village of Itasca

Who: Village of Itasca, Community Development Department

What: The goals of the internship are to: Provide an experiential learning opportunity in all functional areas of a Community Development Department of a local government entity; Provide insight into working in the public sector; Arrange for Intern to have an opportunity to write reports and make public presentations; Flexibility in developing work assignments around the specific interests of the successful candidate to help them for employment opportunities; Evening meetings and special events, as required.
Specific responsibilities include:
  • The Community Development Intern provides general support to the department with a primary focus on planning, zoning, and economic development activities. This position reports to the Senior Planner and/or the Community Development Director. 
  • Assist in the essential day-to-day operations of the Community Development Department, including but not limited to customer service activities, responding to FOIA requests, scheduling inspections and meetings, data entry, and record and file management.
  • Research and gather information on planning and economic development activities and trends in other communities and markets, including compiling socio-economic data on the community and researching various topics such as density, parking requirements, setback requirements, uses in zoning districts, and other pertinent land use regulations.
  • Assist in the preparation of reports for the Itasca Plan Commission, Historical Commission, and Village Board.
  • Develop articles for Village newsletter, update marketing materials, and coordinate printing and publication of materials.
  • Utilize the Department’s various social media accounts to market the community and inform businesses/residents of its activities.
  • Assist with special projects, such as land use studies, zoning map updates, property studies, RFPs and RFQs, and various reports.
  • Conduct field work, gather and organize data to support planning-related functions. 

Internship Schedule: Flexible days and times based on student’s schedule, generally during normal business hours of Monday through Friday 8:00 am – 4:30 pm. The Village of Itasca is willing to coordinate work hours with college/university for class credit

Qualifications: 

  • Must possess a high school degree or equivalent, and currently enrolled in a Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree from an accredited college or university in urban planning/studies, public administration, or related field with a minimum of two years of completed academic years of college curriculum.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of principles and practices related to urban planning and zoning, building, economic development, or local government.
  • Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication and research and statistical analysis skills.
  • Independent work ethic is essential, as is an ability to work in a team setting
  • Proficiency in MS Office suite including Word, Power Point and Excel, as well as desktop publishing software
  • Proficiency in various social media applications, including but not limited to LinkedIn, Facebook, and Twitter
  • Minimum 18 years of age
  • Criminal background check must be completed with satisfactory results
  • Valid driver’s license. 

The compensation for the Community Development Intern is $15/hour.
