Urban Planning Internship - Lakeview Chamber of Commerce

Who: The Lakeview Chamber of Commerce is a 501(c)(6) non-profit organization whose mission is to support a resilient local economy and high quality of life for the benefit of businesses and residents in Chicago’s West Lakeview community, through neighborhood promotion, business development, advocacy, and public space enhancements.

What: The Chamber, sole service provider for Special Service Area 27 (SSA 27), seeks a part-time urban planning intern who is interested in urban planning, economic development or public administration.The intern will gain hands-on experience collecting and utilizing data for economic development and planning purposes, with the goal of improving the Lakeview neighborhood. We offer a $1,000 stipend and will work with students on class credit.
Responsibilities include:
  • Streetscape Assessment 
    • Gather data related to placemaking initiatives, through field observation. 
    • Identify locations where additional streetscape elements are needed. 
    • Assist with the permitting process for new streetscape elements. 
  • Storefront Census 
    • Update database of storefronts with current business tenants and vacancies within the service area, through field observation.
    •  Update wayfinding kiosks and online property listings based on the Storefront Census. 
  • Pedestrian Counts 
    • Update neighborhood pedestrian counts, through field observation. 
    • Summarize findings for use in attracting people and investment to the neighborhood. 
  • Placemaking
    •  Assist with programming public spaces to create a sense of place and community. 
  • Other tasks as assigned, and there is an opportunity to develop additional projects based on the intern’s interests and learning goals. 
Qualifications: Strong attention to detail, interest in urban planning (or a related field) and experience with Excel or other spreadsheet software is required. Intern must commit to 15 hours per week, March through June. We are flexible about which days of the week the intern would spend in our office at 1409 W. Addison St., Chicago, IL. Must be willing to conduct some outdoor field observation.
