Fall 2018 Internship - Lakeview Chamber of Commerce (Chicago, IL)

 Who: Do you get excited about city data, local businesses and public space? The Lakeview Chamber of Commerce, sole service provider for Special Service Area 27 (SSA 27), seeks a part-time urban planning intern who is interested in urban planning, economic development or public administration. The intern will gain hands-on experience collecting and utilizing data for economic development and planning purposes, with the goal of improving the Lakeview neighborhood. We offer a $1,000 stipend and will work with students on class credit.



Qualifications and Time Commitment
Strong attention to detail, interest in urban planning (or a related field) and experience with Excel or other spreadsheet software is required. Intern must commit to 15 hours per week, mid-August through mid-December. We are flexible about which days of the week the intern would spend in our office at 1409 W. Addison St., Chicago, IL. Must be willing to conduct some outdoor field observation.

Responsibilities

  • Streetscape Assessment o Gather data related to placemaking initiatives, through field observation. 
    • Identify locations where additional streetscape elements are needed. 
    • Assist with the permitting process for new streetscape elements. 
  • Storefront Census 
    • Update database of storefronts with current business tenants and vacancies within the service area, through field observation. 
  • Update wayfinding kiosks and online property listings based on the Storefront Census. Pedestrian Counts 
    • Update neighborhood pedestrian counts, through field observation. o Summarize findings for use in attracting people and investment to the neighborhood. 
  • Placemaking 
    • Assist with programming public spaces to create a sense of place and community. 
  • Other tasks as assigned, and there is an opportunity to develop additional projects based on the intern’s interests and learning goals.

About Special Service Area (SSA) 27 
The Lakeview Chamber of Commerce is the service provider for Special Service Area (SSA) 27. The mission of the SSA is to support a vibrant local economy and high quality of life for the benefit of Lakeview businesses and residents by improving and enhancing public streets and spaces, creating memorable experiences, encouraging spending locally and promoting the neighborhood. The three Strategic Focus Areas of the SSA are as follows:

  • Diversity: Evolve current and design new SSA programs to be more inclusive of people from different ethnicities, social backgrounds, and age groups. 
  • Destination: Position and market Lakeview as an enticing destination for visitors and other Chicago residents through programming that speaks to diverse groups.
  • Density: Advocate for density focused around neighborhood and transportation hubs and main arteries.
Service Area 
The Lakeview Chamber of Commerce service area is from Diversey on the South, to Irving Park Road on the North, and Ravenswood on the West, to Racine on the East.
