What: The Cook County Government Fellowship is a 10 week summer internship opportunity in Chicago for graduate and or law students to develop leadership skills, create a civic network and have a lasting, positive impact on Cook County.
Under the guidance of a management-level program officer, the fellow completes impactful projects in one of the fellowship program areas within Offices Under the President including The President’s Office; The Bureau of Human Resources; The Bureau of Technology; The Bureau of Administration; The Bureau of Asset Management; The Bureau of Economic Development; The Bureau of Finance; The Offices of Human Rights and Ethics; The Justice Advisory Council; The County Auditor; The Secretary to the Board of Commissioners; The Office of Administrative Hearings; and The Law Office of the Public Defender. Assists with various projects and duties to gain first-hand governmental experience, leadership skills and a civic network. Participates in departmental and independent County learning activities and events. Completes a final presentation for the assigned project. Performs other duties as assigned.
The position is full-time, 8:30am - 4:30pm at the Central-Chicago County Building at 118 N. Clark. Pay is $20/hour.
Qualifications: Candidates should be registered in a graduate degree program in business, public policy, public affairs, urban planning, or other related degree. Candidates may also be registered in a law school and currently entering or completed their second or third year.
Knowledge and Skills:
- General knowledge of correct business, legal and/or other technical language usage and their proper application to business forms, letters, records and reports.
- Knowledge of and skill in the use of Microsoft Office.
- Strong writing skills with an ability to clearly articulate issues and analysis in writing.
- Strong oral and written communication skills.
- Strong quantitative research and qualitative analysis skills.
- Mathematical skills necessary to maintain statistical records.
- Ability to use logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions or approaches to problems.
- Good attention to detail with the ability to proof, verify and edit complex data.
- Ability to clearly articulate through written documents concise analysis of assigned material.
- Ability to communicate effectively with tact/courtesy and conduct oneself in a professional manner.
- Ability to gather information and make inquiries, convey information and describe materials to others.
- Ability to work independently.
- Ability to multi-task, take direction from others and have strong organizational skills
