Internship - City of Chicago Department of Planning and Development

Who: City of Chicago Department of Planning and Development

What: The Student Intern Program is for students seeking to gain knowledge of, and valuable work experience in public sector / city government operations. Work hours are flexible to meet the needs to students and City departments. These are temporary positions. Internships are limited to one academic year. Students are limited to working one internship (lasting no more than one academic year) per City department.
Hours vary, but are at least 21 hours per week between 8:00am 6:00pm
Responsibilities include:

  • Performs various administrative and clerical functions to support department activities 
  • Uses various software programs to type documents, create spreadsheets and presentations, and maintain databases 
  • Maintains inventory records, process supply order requests, and distributes supplies to all DPD work sites 
  • Assesses and reports office needs (such as lights, printer supplies, equipment, etc.) 
  • Lifts and transports files boxes, delivery packages, reams of paper, etc. to and from work sites and storage rooms 
  • Processes reproduction requests and delivers to documents to requestor 
  • Collects and sorts both inter-office packages and USPS mail daily 
  • Delivers inter-office packages and USPS mail to all DPD work sites daily 
  • Stamps and delivers outgoing mail to USPS 
  • Provides front desk relief coverage 
 Qualifications:
  •  Must be a student in good academic standing currently enrolled in an accredited college, university, or law school OR a student in good academic standing currently enrolled in an accredited business or data processing / information technology school. Must have a minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.5 on a 4.0 grading scale or a 3.5 on a 5.0 grading scale. 
  • Students must maintain the required GPA throughout the duration of their employment / internship
  • Must be enrolled in school with a minimum of 6 credit hours (or quarter hour equivalency) throughout the duration of the internship, with the exception of academic breaks, i.e. summer 
  • Must have knowledge of Microsoft Office Applications Word, Excel, and PowerPoint Disclaimer 
  • At the time of application, you must attach a resume and current transcripts or enrollment verification to be considered for this position. 
  • You must provide your transcripts or diploma, professional license, or training certificates at time of processing, if applicable 
  • You must be enrolled in school (with the exception of academic breaks) throughout your internship if you are selected.
