Advocating for Policy Change Strategy:

Supporting and advancing policy and advocacy efforts to effect systemic change.

Systemic problems require systemic solutions—programmatic intervention alone is not enough.

From redlining to predatory lending, policies and practices have played an instrumental role in preventing generations of Black and Latinx families from building as much wealth as white families. Laws and policies were instrumental in creating the racial and ethnic wealth gap. It will take new policies and reforms to close it.

Background

The Trust has long supported nonprofits engaged in policy research, advocacy, and community organizing across all areas of our work, and we will continue to do so in service of our strategic priorities.

The Opportunity

Recognizing how vital systemic change is to closing the racial and ethnic wealth gap, the Trust now uses our voice and platform to engage directly in policy and advocacy efforts. This shift is an important step forward in how we approach our work to strengthen the Chicago region.

Our Approach

To create lasting solutions to our region’s most pressing challenges, the Trust supports and leads efforts to build public knowledge and will around key issues; strengthen the public policy landscape; and advance policy and systems change.

Catalyzing Neighborhood Investment Strategy:

For our region to prosper, we need our Black and Latinx communities to thrive.

That means safe neighborhoods with access to services that many take for granted—grocery stores, parks, transit systems, restaurants, and more.

Background

The Trust’s Catalyzing Neighborhood Investment strategy focuses on creating the environment that allows investment to happen in historically disinvested Black and Latinx communities.

The Opportunity

When it comes to helping individuals, families, and communities build wealth, neighborhood investment is a force multiplier. Neighborhood development projects create businesses and jobs, bring in new services and amenities that make life better for residents, and increase the flow of dollars to and within the community.

Our Approach

Because revitalizing neighborhoods will only be effective if we work together, collaboration is core to our approach. The Trust supports eight priorities across three major areas of the neighborhood investment landscape.

Expected Assignments:

  • Research on key policy issues, such as federal economic recovery legislation and funding, infrastructure funding, housing and homeownership programs, property tax sale systems, community safety initiatives, vacant land use, among others.
