Research Assistantship - Great Lakes Center for Farmworker Health and Wellbeing

About the center: The Great Lakes Center for Farmworker Health and Wellbeing (GLCFHW)
is one of twelve NIOSH Centers for Agricultural Safety and Health that are funded to conduct
occupational disease and injury prevention research, develop and implement educational
programs and interventions, and connect with governmental and nongovernmental agencies to
improve conditions surrounding agricultural health and safety. A main focus of the center is
working with farmworkers, many of whom are Spanish-speaking and born in Mexico and
Central America.

Opportunity: The Center is hiring one graduate level Research Assistant to assist with
outreach. Commitment is 10 hrs/week and will come with tuition remission for the Fall 2023
semester.

Reports to: Deputy Director, Gabriela Gracia.

Job Responsibilities include:
  • Attend community partner events and conduct outreach at locations across IL
  • Prepare resources, trainings, and merchandise for outreach events
  • Prepare and administer surveys to improve outreach to farmworkers
  • Collect and maintain outreach data
  • Manage social media presence and assist with other center communications
  • Assist with organizing meetings with internal and external stakeholders
  • Assist with literature reviews, preparing protocols, and other research support
Job Knowledge & Skills: Enrolled in graduate or doctoral degree program at UIC in public
health, social science, or related field. Students from all UIC colleges and different SPH
divisions may apply. A minimum of 1-year related experience in community engagement
preferred. Spanish-speaking students strongly encouraged to apply.

Working Conditions: Mix of work from home, on-site work at SPH, and outreach at
community events across the state of IL. Car not required. Requires sitting in an office and
standing at community events for an extended period. Tech skills and regular typing required.
